And he has put all things under his feet and has made him the head over all things for the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all.
Ephesians 1:22-23

by Mary Oliver

Another morning and I wake with thirst
for the goodness I do not have. I walk
out to the pond and all the way God has
given us such beautiful lessons. Oh Lord,
I was never a quick scholar but sulked
and hunched over my books past the
hour and the bell; grant me, in your
mercy, a little more time. Love for the
Earth and love for you are having such a
long conversation in my heart. Who
knows what will finally happen or
where I will be sent, yet already I have
given a great many things away, expecting
to be told to pack nothing, except the
prayer which, with this thirst, I am
slowly learning.

Pentecost Celebration
Sunday, June 9, is Pentecost when we mark the coming of the Holy Spirit upon Jesus' disciples and celebrate the birthday of the Church. We have plans to celebrate in several ways that Sunday.

  • In most Churches, clergy wear red vestments on Pentecost to signify the work of the Spirit. It eventually became customary in many parishes, including ours, for the congregation to wear red as well. All are invited to wear red to remind us of the fire of the spirit.
  • We are very excited to again have Christ Church be the site of a temporary art installation by parishioner Sukey Bryan, an internationally exhibiting painter, printmaker and installation artist. All 12 panels of “The Fire Within” will be installed in our sanctuary in celebration of Pentecost (3 panels shown above). These will go up in the church the week of June 3.
  • And what is a birthday celebration without a party and cake?! We will continue our tradition with a Coffee Hour after the 10:15 a.m. service with balloons and special cakes for every month of the year and we will celebrate all of our birthdays along with the Church. Pick your birthday month, or take a nibble from each offering -- Happy Birthday, Christ Church!!!

Organ Recital: Ethan Haman
The final offering of this season's Living Harmony concert series will be on Sunday, June 23, at 4:00 p.m. in the church. Join us for a varied recital of organ works ranging from the Baroque era to the present by Ethan Haman, who served as organist at Christ Church from 2011 to 2015. Haman has played numerous full organ recitals in the San Francisco Bay Area, Salinas, Los Angeles, Reno, and Harvard University, as well as shared concerts in several notable venues such as San Francisco’s Davies Symphony Hall, Stanford University’s Memorial Church, Notre Dame d’Auteuil in Paris, Christ Church Cathedral in Montréal, and Los Angeles’ Union Station. Haman recently graduated from the University of Southern California's Thornton School of Music, where he received joint degrees in pipe organ performance and composition as a Presidential Scholar. Expanding Horizons: The Diocesan Capital Campaign
The Diocese of California is currently running a capital campaign intended to sustain its ministry and that of member institutions through initiatives in four key areas: global outreach and advocacy, essential housing, congregational support, and creation care. More information on the Expanding Horizons campaign can be found here. The Diocese is asking that all parishes support this initiative in one of many possible ways. The vestry decided at our April meeting to provide information about the campaign to parishioners for four weeks in June, beginning this Sunday, June 2nd, and ending on Sunday, June 23rd, and invite direct donations by those who feel so moved. Amy Cook, the Diocesan Working Group Head for Faith Formation, will be with us this Sunday to introduce the campaign and answer questions.

Additional Readers Needed for Pentecost Sunday - Both Services
Do you speak a language other than English? Are you willing to add your voice to make a joyful and chaotic sound on Pentecost Sunday, June 9? We are looking for a people to read part of the lesson from Acts aloud from their seat in several different languages. (The full lesson is Acts 2:1-21; readers will join the lector in another language from verses 4 through 14). If you are interested in taking part in this, please contact Deanne at and let her know which language you speak. She will be able to give you details the week of June 3 on when and how to take part. Please include in your note which service you usually attend (8:00 a.m. or 10:15 a.m.) so we can make sure there is a critical mass to do this at both services. Thank you / Gracias / Merci / Grazi / Danke, etc.!

October 5 Harvest Festival Event
Call for Volunteer Planning Committee Members

Calling for volunteers to commit to the Planning Committee for the October 5 Harvest Festival Event to be held at Christ Church. This is going to be a very exciting event for the church to host for the entire community, including our Ventana families. We will be discussing festival event development, such as various participatory stations for pickle making, taffy apple making, candle making, pie-eating contests, cotton candy making, funky gourd making (similar to pumpkin decorating), trail mix making station, scarecrow paper bag making station, ring toss on a bottle top game, bobbing for apples on a string game, bowling for pumpkin game, adult beer garden, food pavilion, grape stomping/wine making, costume pageant contests, etc. Not all ideas may work, but all ideas to encourage healthy family participation are encouraged. We will be meeting again this Saturday, June 1, 11:00 am-12:00 pm in the church conference room (the time is flexible so if earlier or later is better just let us know).

This is going to be a spectacularly fun event, and we are excited to have your time and support to help make this happen. Please call me at (978) 473-9369 or email me at to let me know your ideas, interest and participation level, and which meeting date(s) will work for you.

Go Team!
Suzette Hedley, Organizer

Meditation Group Summer Break
Our Thursday evening meditation group will take a summer break from June 20th until September 12th, the first Thursday after "Rally Sunday" on September 8th. This means that we'll meet three more times - tonight, the 6th, and the 13th - before going on hiatus.

Have an Announcement for the Thursday Newsletter or Sunday Herald?
Please submit items to Deanne ( by Tuesday, 12 noon, for that week's newsletter and Herald. Depending on timing of an event and content already submitted, we may decide to wait a week and would notify you if that were the case. We usually start publicizing events there weeks prior to the event.
