Worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness.
Psalm 29:2

When Earth's Last Picture Is Painted
Rudyard Kipling

When Earth's last picture is painted
And the tubes are twisted and dried
When the oldest colors have faded
And the youngest critic has died
We shall rest, and faith, we shall need it
Lie down for an aeon or two
'Till the Master of all good workmen
Shall put us to work anew
And those that were good shall be happy
They'll sit in a golden chair
They'll splash at a ten league canvas
With brushes of comet's hair
They'll find real saints to draw from
Magdalene, Peter, and Paul
They'll work for an age at a sitting
And never be tired at all.
And only the Master shall praise us.
And only the Master shall blame.
And no one will work for the money.
No one will work for the fame.
But each for the joy of the working,
And each, in his separate star,
Will draw the thing as he sees it.
For the God of things as they are!
This Sunday
  • Parishioner Alice Landis will be giving the sermon at both services and we welcome guest organist and choirmaster Eric Lebel at our second service.
  • CSA Food Drive:  Donations can be dropped off at either service. CSA's food needs are even greater as they reach out to serve government workers currently not receiving an income. CSA is in need of healthy and nutritious non-perishable items, including boxes of cereal, oatmeal, pop-top canned food items (fruits, vegetables, meat, etc.), flour, oil, condiments, salad dressings, etc. CSA no longer wants bulk packaged items that they have to divide out into individual packages - no 10 lb bags of rice, no restaurant size mustard dispensers. Please keep items to individual family sized packaging - yes to 10 individual cans of tuna packaged together as this is essentially individual cans.
  • Sunday Worship:  8:00 a.m. Eucharist in the Church; 10:15 a.m. Choral Eucharist in the Church; Creative Holy Play for preschool through pre-teen during the 10:15 a.m. service; Youth Group meets after the 10:15 a.m. service.
  • Choir Rehearsal:  9:00 a.m. in the Church
  • The Forum:  9:00 a.m. in the Fireside Room. We continue with our exploration of spirituality and the brain through a wonderful Great Course, The Spiritual Brain: Science and Religious Experience. This week we will look at "The Brain and Religious Rituals." All are welcome!
  • Coffee Hour:  in the Parish Hall following the 10:15 service
  • Vestry Meeting:  12:00 p.m. in the Conference Room
  • Sunday Seven Band Rehearsal:  1:30 p.m. in the Fireside Room
  • Convivium Rehearsal:  5:00 p.m. in the Parish Hall
  • AA:  8:00 p.m. Co-Ed Step Study Group in the Fireside Room
  • Sunday's lesson can be found online by clicking here (first lesson will be Genesis 2:18-24 instead of Isaiah)

Understanding and Recovering From Loss - Starts Tonight
Everyone experiences loss at some time in life. Whether you are grieving the loss of a spouse, family member, friend, job, or health, or are caring for someone who is, understanding your grief and your reactions to it is not easy on your own. The Rev. Jani Wild will be hosting a grief class at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in Saratoga (Room 40), Thursdays, January 10-February 28, 7:00-8:30 p.m. Together we will look at the steps of grieving and how to begin to move on beyond loss. We will use the book How To Recover from Loss: Understanding and Recovering from Grief by Robyn Ledwith Mar. Its message of survival, recovery, and hope for a new life will bring comfort to anyone who is grieving. It can help lift the burden of grieving for your loss. Please contact The Rev. Jani Wild at jwild@st-andrews.org if interested or if you would like more information.

Ventana Open House - Saturday!
Our parish school, Ventana, will be holding an Open House for prospective families this Saturday, January 12, 10:00 a.m.-12:00 noon. Parents and kids are welcome, no RSVP needed. It's an opportunity to explore the campus, meet teachers and talk with current students, parents and alumni. If you have friends or family members with preschool (ages 2-5) or elementary (K-5) aged children looking for a school, invite them to visit Ventana.

Organ Recital by Ethan Haman - Sunday!
Our beloved organist emeritus and longtime friend of Christ Church, Ethan Haman, will be performing a solo organ recital at St. Mark's Episcopal Church, Berkeley, this Sunday, January 13, at 6:00 p.m. The Schola Cantorum of the church will be offering Evensong at 5:30 p.m. followed by Ethan's recital at 6:00 p.m., which will feature organ works by Johann Sebastian Bach, Dieterich Buxtehude, Angela Kraft Cross, and one of Ethan's signature hymn improvisations. Annual Parish Gathering to be held on January 27
Please mark your calendar for Christ Church's Annual Gathering immediately following the 10:15 a.m. service in the Parish Hall on Sunday, January 27. Every year in late January the entire parish is invited to come together to reflect on the year that has passed and look ahead to the year to come. This is an opportunity to hear from various parish leaders about our ministries, get an update on our finances, elect new vestry members and delegates to Diocesan gatherings, and - importantly - enjoy a delicious meal together. It is also a time to bring your own questions, hopes and dreams for discussion. Music and table conversation will be interspersed around the reports, though we intend to keep the meeting shorter this January than last. Also new this year: we intend to have the Annual Report prepared by Sunday, January 20, in the hopes that making this available to parishioners ahead of time will allow you to come prepared and informed to this important and inspiring gathering. Please feel free to reach out to Rev. Claire or any member of the vestry with questions.

Parish Potluck and Presentation from Parishioner Sukey Bryan
Date Change
On Friday, February 1, parishioner Sukey Bryan will present a program on her installation art, some of which we have been privileged to enjoy on our campus (see photos). Sukey is currently the Artist-In-Residence at Grace Cathedral. We will gather in the Parish Hall at 5:30 p.m. for a social time, followed by a potluck dinner at 6:00, and Sukey's presentation at 7:00 p.m. Please bring a main dish, salad, dessert, wine or appetizers to share.

Rise Against Hunger Meal Packing Service Event
Join members of the Christ Church and Ventana School community on Saturday, February 9, 10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. as we package meals to serve an impoverished community through Rise Against Hunger, an international aid organization. Last year this proved to be a fun, energizing and inspiring event as we came together to make a positive impact and provide food for over 10,000 families. This is a family-friendly service opportunity and children of all ages (see photos from last year) are encouraged to participate - there is something for everyone to do. Your RSVP will help us to plan for the correct number of packaging stations and to ensure we have enough snacks and supplies for everyone. Please click here to register to take part in this community event.

Scout Sunday Pancake Breakfast
To celebrate Scout Sunday, and to say thank you to our parish for the support we provide, Boy Scout Troop 30 will be serving a pancake breakfast on Sunday, February 10, 9:00-10:00 a.m. in the Parish Hall. Stay after the 8:00 a.m. service or come early for the 10:15 a.m. service and enjoy a hot breakfast!

On Sunday afternoon, February 10, Grace Cathedral and The Rt. Rev. Marc Handley Andrus, Bishop of California, invite couples who have been married or partnered for 50 years or more to celebrate their years together. This festal Choral Evensong will be sung by the Cathedral Camerata. Couples are invited to renew their vows to each other during the service, and the bishop will pronounce God's blessing. 2019 Pledge Envelopes
There were only six requests for pledge envelopes, so we did not order any for 2019. We had a few left over boxes from 2018 and have relabled the dates on these envelopes for 2019. If you did not request 2019 pledge envelopes on your pledge card, and would like envelopes, contact Deanne in the office (office@ccla.us). We still have a few of the relabeled boxes available.

Updated Online Giving!
We have made significant changes for online donations on the Giving page of our website. We are very excited to offer you more flexibility in your online giving:

  • You now can set up a recurring payment by selecting “Set Up Automated Giving” (weekly, every two weeks, monthly, 1st & 15th of the month).

  • You now can select “Remember Me” to avoid inputting information over and over again.

New Parish Directory
Updated parish directories are available in the office.
