Proclaim the greatness of the Lord our God.
Psalm 99:9

Wouldst thou know my meaning?
By Mechtild of Magdeburg

Wouldst thou know my meaning?
Lie down in the Fire
See and taste the Flowering
Godhead through thy being;
Feel the Holy Spirit
Moving and compelling
Thee within the Flowing
Fire and Light of God.

Upcoming Events

Coming Next in The Forum
Beginning Sunday, August 11, 9:00-10:00 a.m., The Forum will feature a four-week series exploring the history and structure of our liturgy. Have you ever wondered why we do what we do on Sunday mornings? What's unique about Episcopal worship, and what do we have in common with other denominations? Where did The Book of Common Prayer come from? The series will be led by Rev. Claire as well as guest speakers. Come with your questions and your curiosity!

Summer BBQ Last Call - note time change 5:00 p.m.
Our final Summer BBQ will be Wednesday, August 14 at 5:00 p.m. The church will supply burgers, garden burgers, hot dogs, buns and the fixins, and beverages. Feel free to bring a salad, side dish or dessert to share with the community. All are welcome - take a night off from cooking to catch up with parishioners and staff! This also will be a great opportunity to welcome back our Ventana teachers, who will be on campus for Professional Development that week in anticipation of school beginning on August 21st.

Music for Mindfulness
Sunday, August 25, 4:00 p.m.
Parish Hall

Experience an ancient contemplative practice, the Labyrinth, through the lenses of meditation and music. As we move through a guided sequence of seated and walking meditations led by Rev. Claire and parishioner Alice Landis, enjoy a program of reflective music offered by Director of Music and pianist Eric Tuan and the vocal artists of Convivium. Nourish your ears and soul with the sinuous melodies of Gregorian chant and the mesmerizing harmonies of Arvo Pärt, John Cage, and Meredith Monk.

Sister Act Sing Along
In 1992's film Sister Act, Whoopi Goldberg plays a worldly singer who witnesses a mob crime. When a contract is put out on her life, the police hide her as a nun in a San Francisco convent where she has trouble fitting in. Upon learning of her music background, the choir nuns elect her to take over as choir director. Let's just say hilarity ensues! Even if you're not familiar with all the songs in the film, we'll run it with subtitles so that everyone can sing along. And who knows, maybe one of these songs will make it into Sunday's 10:15 a.m. service! Bring a dessert, bottle of wine, or non-alcoholic drink to share, and join us on Saturday, September 7, at 7:00 p.m. in the Parish Hall. Screening of the movie and singing will start at 7:30 p.m. Sister Act is rated PG for mild violence and language.

Compassion Week Los Altos: September 30-October 6
Mark your calendars for Christ Church's participation in Los Altos' annual Compassion Week, a week-long series of service and social justice opportunities that enable individuals and families to build a stronger and more empathetic community. Parishioners Marcene Van Dierendonck, Alice Larse, and members of the Outreach Committee have been participating in regular planning meetings with partner institutions, including the Los Altos Community Foundation and other communities of faith, and working with Rev. Claire to determine which activities might be hosted here on our campus. More details will be provided in the coming weeks. For now, save the dates! All are encouraged to participate in at least one service event as part of this effort, and hopefully more.

Planning for Compassion Week: The Christ Church Social Justice Group will host a meeting about Compassion Week on Sunday, August 11, at 12:00 p.m. in the Conference Room. They will report on service activities being planned for that week on the church campus, as well as volunteer opportunities off campus. One of the Social Justice Group's goals is to "Deepen the experience of Christ's love and inspiration in the life of volunteers from Christ Church, Ventana, and the other Compassion Week partner groups." All are welcome.

Lids from Plastic Bottles Can Be Art Instead of Landfill
Ventana is collecting plastic bottle lids of different sizes, shapes and colors to use as raw material for crafts and making murals. Consider collecting lids for the month of August and donating them to Ventana at the end of the month.

Emergency Call for Blood Donations
Over the 4th of July holiday week, more than 450 fewer blood drives were held than during a typical week which may have led to as many as 17,000 fewer blood donations. In response, the American Red Cross has issued an emergency call for blood donors nationwide. While all blood types are needed, there is critical need for type O donors. For more information on blood donation and/or to final a local Red Cross donation site or blood drive, visit the American Red Cross Blood Services website.

Homestays for Red Priest - Three More Needed
To launch the 2019-2020 season of the Living Harmony Concert Series, the British Baroque quartet Red Priest will be performing at Christ Church on Sunday, September 29, at 7:30 p.m., and engaging in an outreach event with Ventana School on Monday, September 30. We are still looking for homestays for three of their instrumentalists for the nights of September 28, 29, and 30. Would you be willing to host one of the instrumentalists for these three nights? Your hospitality makes it possible for Christ Church to host these world-renowned artists and share their music with our community. Please email Director of Music, Eric Tuan (eric@ccla.us), if you are able to host. Many thanks for considering!

Do You Own a Grand Piano?
We are looking for two adjustable piano benches to be used by the visiting artists from Red Priest for their September 29 evening concert and for the September 30 outreach event at Ventana. If you have an adjustable height piano bench you would be willing to loan for the concert and outreach program, please contact director of music Eric Tuan at (925) 360-3031.

Reminder - Policy for Parishioner Expense Reimbursement
To help us manage expenses most efficiently, any expenses a parishioner would like to have reimbursed must be submitted within 60 days. In addition, to the extent smaller expenses (less then $25) can be held and submitted together, that would be greatly appreciated. Lastly, the church does have a credit card that Deanne can use to make purchase online or in person, and we regularly order all types of supplies from Staples (office, coffee hour, kitchen, etc.). Before you make a purchase, consider if it might be something we already have or something that Deanne can order or purchase (office@ccla.us).

Have an Announcement for the Thursday Newsletter or Sunday Herald?
Please submit items to Deanne (office@ccla.us) by Tuesday, 12 noon, for that week's newsletter and Herald. Depending on timing of an event and content already submitted, we may decide to wait a week and would notify you if that were the case. We usually start publicizing events three weeks prior to the event.
