My soul magnifies the Lord,
and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior
Luke 1:46-47

A Blessing For Solitude
By John O’Donohue

May you recognize in your life the presence,
power and light of your soul.

May you realize that you are never alone,
that your soul in its brightness and belonging
connects you intimately with the rhythm of the
universe.

May you have respect for your own individuality and
difference.

May you realize that the shape of your soul is
unique,
that you have a special destiny here,
that behind the facade of your life
there is something beautiful, good, and eternal happening.

May you learn to see your self
with the same delight,
pride, and expectation
with which God sees you in every moment.

Note - the office will be closed tomorrow, Friday, August 16.

Music for Mindfulness
Sunday, August 25, 4:00 p.m.
Parish Hall

Experience an ancient contemplative practice, the Labyrinth, through the lenses of meditation and music. As we move through a guided sequence of seated and walking meditations led by Rev. Claire and parishioner Alice Landis, enjoy a program of reflective music offered by Director of Music and pianist Eric Tuan and the vocal artists of Convivium. Nourish your ears and soul with the sinuous melodies of Gregorian chant and the mesmerizing harmonies of Arvo Pärt, John Cage, and Meredith Monk.

Men's Group Fellowship and Dinner
The Christ Church Men's Group will be having their next dinner on Tuesday, September 3, at 6:00 p.m. in the Parish Hall. Please mark your calendars and plan to join us for dinner, fellowship and to hear our guest speaker, parishioner Alice Landis, talk about “The Promise and the Pitfalls of Genetic Testing.” Meal donations of $10 are suggested. All are welcome! For planning purposes, please RSVP to Bob Stanfield (kasras@aol.com).

Sister Act Sing Along
In 1992's film Sister Act, Whoopi Goldberg plays a worldly singer who witnesses a mob crime. When a contract is put out on her life, the police hide her as a nun in a San Francisco convent where she has trouble fitting in. Upon learning of her music background, the choir nuns elect her to take over as choir director. Let's just say hilarity ensues! Even if you're not familiar with all the songs in the film, we'll run it with subtitles so that everyone can sing along. And who knows, maybe one of these songs will make it into Sunday's 10:15 a.m. service! Bring a dessert, bottle of wine, or non-alcoholic drink to share, and join us on Saturday, September 7, at 7:00 p.m. in the Parish Hall. Screening of the movie and singing will start at 7:30 p.m. Sister Act is rated PG for mild violence and language

Compassion Week Los Altos: September 30-October 6
Mark your calendars for Christ Church's participation in Los Altos' annual Compassion Week, a week-long series of service and social justice opportunities that enable individuals and families to build a stronger and more empathetic community. Parishioners Marcene Van Dierendonck, Alice Larse, and members of the Outreach Committee have been participating in regular planning meetings with partner institutions, including the Los Altos Community Foundation and other communities of faith, and working with Rev. Claire to determine which activities might be hosted here on our campus. More details will be provided in the coming weeks. For now, save the dates! All are encouraged to participate in at least one service event as part of this effort, and hopefully more.

Reminder - Stop When Exiting Onto Border Road
We received a call from a neighbor that cars are regularly exiting our driveway onto Border Road without stopping and checking for cars coming from either direction. There is a Stop Sign at the end of our driveway. Please remember to stop and check both directions for cars before turning onto Border Road. We want to keep our neighbors happy!

Parish Kitchen
At its July meeting, the Vestry discussed the parish kitchen. The kitchen was fully permitted through 2011, and the Vestry is starting the process to understand what needs to happen for our kitchen to be fully permitted again. Deanne has begun that research. We will continue using the kitchen as we have been, but will not be adding additional types of events until we have a better understanding of what is needed. Rev. Claire and Deanne are interested in hearing from you if you feel called to help lead this project or participate in doing some of the research.

2019 Christ Church Parish Survey - One More Week to Share Your Perspectives and Ideas
We recently sent out a short parish survey. It was sent from the same "This Week at CCLA" email system we use for this weekly newsletter. We have heard from a few parishioners that the survey email ended up in their Spam email folder. In case you didn't receive, or can't find, the survey email, here is a link to the survey. We hope to hear from you!

Look What We've Uncovered!
In further cleaning out of closets and boxes in the offices, we've found a few things that you may want to have. There is an assorted collection of old (or should we say vintage?) Christ Church t-shirts on a table in the Parish Hall. Help yourself when you are here on Sunday! We have three copies of A Dictionary for Episcopalians on the table in the church office. And finally a Pentax 8.0 Megapixels point and shoot digital camera with battery charger (contact Deanne in the office, office@ccla.us or 650-948-2151). All items are first come, first served.

Lost and Found
A few clothing items have accumulated in the church office. We'll be using part of one of the coat racks in the Church Narthex to display these items in case one is something you've lost. Also a Honda car key and a pair of sunglasses were found sitting on the piano in the church. Contact Deanne if these are yours (office@ccla.us or 650-948-2151).

Lids from Plastic Bottles Can Be Art Instead of Landfill
Ventana is collecting plastic bottle lids of different sizes, shapes and colors to use as raw material for crafts and making murals. Consider collecting lids for the month of August and donating them to Ventana at the end of the month.

Emergency Call for Blood Donations Continues
While thousands of people from across the country responded to the emergency request for blood and platelet donations issued by the American Red Cross in early July, a critical blood shortage remains. Right now, the Red Cross has less than a five-day blood supply on hand. The Red Cross strives to have a five-day supply at all times to meet the needs of patients every day and be prepared for emergencies that may require significant volumes of donated blood products. Donors of all blood types are urgently needed to help restock the shelves. The Red Cross is thanking those who come in to donate blood or platelets between July 25 and August 31 by emailing them a $5 Amazon.com gift card claim code. For more information on blood donation and/or to final a local Red Cross donation site or blood drive, visit the American Red Cross Blood Services website.

Homestays for Red Priest - Three More Still Needed
To launch the 2019-2020 season of the Living Harmony Concert Series, the British Baroque quartet Red Priest will be performing at Christ Church on Sunday, September 29, at 7:30 p.m., and engaging in an outreach event with Ventana School on Monday, September 30. We are still looking for homestays for three of their instrumentalists for the nights of September 28, 29, and 30. Would you be willing to host one of the instrumentalists for these three nights? Your hospitality makes it possible for Christ Church to host these world-renowned artists and share their music with our community. Please email Director of Music, Eric Tuan (eric@ccla.us), if you are able to host. Many thanks for considering!

Have an Announcement for the Thursday Newsletter or Sunday Herald?
Please submit items to Deanne (office@ccla.us) by Tuesday, 12 noon, for that week's newsletter and Herald. Depending on timing of an event and content already submitted, we may decide to wait a week and would notify you if that were the case. We usually start publicizing events three weeks prior to the event.

Follow Up

Closing Out Summer BBQ Season
Despite the heat last night, a group of parishioners and Ventana staff enjoyed freshly grilled hamburgers, veggie burgers and hot dogs, accompanied by a selection of sides, desserts and beverages. A big thank you to Patti White (Fellowship Chair), the Summer BBQ team (Charles Thompson - June 26; Charlie Munch - July 10; Dennis Hawkins - July 31; Byron Rovegno - August 14) , DJ Scott Stanfield, and all who helped set up, grill and clean up at each of the Summer BBQs. Until next summer...
