Academy Spotlight

Artist Tara McTighe loves VPA at Skyline because of the classes and the unique opportunities she's been given to grow as an artist.  Work through NAHS (National Art Honor Society) and art shows have given her invaluable experiences.  3D Art teacher Jen McLees has had the pleasure of working with Tara both in the classroom and as Vice President of Skyline's NAHS.  "Tara embraces opportunities to learn," according to Jen McLees. "She pushes herself consistently with her art - with media, developing voice, compositional risk, and vibrant ideas." As a sophomore in NAHS, Tara led the charge in a group installation that included a twisted 10 foot tree made of chicken wire, wood, rolled paper, and light. Mrs. McLees also spoke of Tara's "...her ambition led by strong, well thought-out plans, and her commitment to the advancement of the arts - in her own artwork, that of her peers, and her school community,"  which is evident in her work on school installation pieces.  There is a considerable amount of hard work and planning that goes into each project, and Tara is currently working on another installation that will be on display this spring.
When describing her own art, Tara says, "My art is dark and uses surreal imagery to convey an idea and emotion. My artwork has created its own unique voice through my recurring forms in the figure, fragments of figures, and through an abstract show of emotion." Tara uses bold, contrasting colors to convey both balance and clash, and creates a lot of detail. Through a wide range of materials, Tara makes her artwork to express "grief, death, and loss, but also happiness through imagery."
You can view Tara's work at the Firehouse in Longmont starting tonight, along with her VPA senior classmates.  The show's opening reception is from 6-9pm tonight, and will be available until April 3rd.

The Tribute to Teachers awards program, sponsored by St. Vrain Valley Schools Education Foundation, provides the opportunity for students, parents, volunteers, fellow educators, school staff and community members to recognize and honor individual teachers at the Pre-K – 12th grade levels in St. Vrain Valley Schools who exemplify excellence in teaching. By paying tribute to teachers who have an extraordinary impact on the achievements of students, the Education Foundation and the community hope to honor the accomplishments of all teachers.

One teacher from each St. Vrain Valley School will receive the Teacher of the Year recognition for their school. Two other teachers from each school will be honored as Teacher of the Year finalists. The Teacher of the Year for each school will receive a $100. The recipients and finalists all receive a certificate of recognition during the Tribute to Teachers event on April 30, 2022. From the school Teacher of the Year honorees, a district wide Teacher of the Year and four finalists will be chosen.

Please only drop off and pick up students on the east side of the building where the main entrance is. Please do not pull into the entrance off of Alpine Street to pick up or drop off students as this entrance needs to remain clear for staff, employees and buses at all times.
