PT Indivisible Huddle
Monthly Meeting
February 12, 2019
5:00 to 6:30

Let's take a look at the new Indivisible Guides! Our work on the midterms changed the political landscape, giving us new opportunities. Indivisible has posted two new guides: Indivisible on Offense and Indivisible States. Bruce Cowan will give an overview of the guides and how we can use them to direct our energy over the coming year. Bruce is a retired teacher who works with our Elections Committee.

**Legislative district:

Arrangements for this event have been a whirlwind effort that began in earnest after Indivisible 2.0 was issued. That seems like a long time ago, but it was only weeks ago. Getting such a late start, finding a location for our morning session, and afternoon debriefing offered us few choices. As such, we have a maximum in that space of 60.

The Virtual Lobby Day, via live streaming the morning session, and adopt-a-district idea are a direct result of our efforts to ensure more can be involved than there is physical space for.

Registration request forms must be submitted no later than Feb 1, 2019. On or before Feb 5, everyone will be notified as to who will be attending. We considered asking everyone to limit themselves to one or two people per LD but didn’t want to discourage someone from completing the form, thinking surely there are two others who will register before they do. We want to ensure we fill that space to the maximum. It isn’t a perfect process. All efforts are being made to ensure we have a very successful lobby day.

ON A PERSONAL NOTE...I ATTENDED THE AAUW LOBBY DAY LAST WEEK AND IT WAS WONDERFUL.  IF YOU CAN ATTEND, THIS EVENT DO AND MEET MORE LIKE MINDED INDIVISIBLE MEMBERS FROM ACROSS THE STATE. ds

Environmental Group

First for the good news!!!
King County Council Approves Moratorium on Fossil Fuel Expansion.  For more information on this click here.

And...the rest of the story:
Indivisible Environmental Team Meeting, Tuesday, January 15th
The Environmental Team discussed our top priorities for the year 2019.  They are:
  1. 100% Clean Electricity – electricity is the second largest source of climate pollution in Washington. It is responsible for nearly a fifth of our annual emissions. We can achieve a 100% Clean Electricity system to power our economy and take a significant step towards achieving our climate goals.
  2. Orca Emergency Response: Our Southern Resident Orcas and the chinook they eat are endangered and the Northwest region including Canada has to respond with immediate action in order to save these important species.  We will work for stronger laws to protect habitat for a healthy food web and prevent toxic pollution to ensure enough healthy food to sustain our SRO’s.
  3. Environmentalists in Washington have successfully pushed back on expansion of pipelines and coal transportation by rail the last few years.  But the protections need to be enforced and continued work to fend off development of methanol and methane facilities.  Additionally, our Salish Sea must be protected by limiting any increase in tankers carrying fossil fuels through our waterways to Asia.
  4. Plastics!!! Our Team will work with groups to deal with the issue of plastics in our ocean!  We can make a difference in starting the process of education, options and working with government on this urgent issue.
Please join us as we work on these important issues.  We meet the THIRD Tuesday every month at Unity Church from 5:00-6:30.

Jefferson County Immigrant Rights Advocates (JCIRA)

WE - JCIRA and INDIVISIBLE and MoveOn -  WE'RE READY!

PT Indivisible Huddle, JCIRA and other local organizations quickly mobilized to join MoveOn in a national demonstrate last Tuesday.  We would stand in support of immigrants, government workers and contractors, and speak for everyone relying on  a functioning federal government.  T backed off and so we put our demonstration on hold.  We also alerted  everyone to be ready on February 15, the next "deadline." NO FUNDING FOR THE WALL - REOPEN THE GOVERNMENT ALLOW ASYLUM SEEKERS INTO THE US.  We'LL be ready again if necessary!

"MIGUEL'S" STORY
Many of you know about Miguel, the Olympic Peninsula resident who was in the Northwest Detention Center for almost a year.  Despite the best efforts of several lawyers, 60 letters of support from the community and the strong support of JCIRA and the PT community, Miguel was deported last week.  He was released in Ciudad Juarez.  JCIRA will continue to stay in touch with him and help his family here as they work together to figure out their future.

JCIRA WILL TAKE PART IN IMMIGRATION-RELATED LOBBYING IN OLYMPIA ON FEBRUARY 5. We'll share what we learn at the next HUDDLE meeting on February 12.

JCIRA and INDIVISIBLE CAN WORK TOGETHER TO SEE THAT THE NEW CONGRESS TAKES THESE ACTIONS ASAP:

  • No taxpayer money spent on any wall or other border barrier construction
  • Decrease funds for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP)
  • Refuse to allow the Administration to raid other accounts (through transfer or reprogramming) to increase funds available for the wall, immigration detention, and other anti-immigrant programs
  • Demand a commitment from Trump that he will not invoke a national border emergency, or otherwise undermine Congress’ constitutional ‘power of the purse’ by unilaterally seizing funds from other government accounts toward construction of a wall or any other other physical barriers.

Raging Warriors for Healthcare
Raging Warriors are reinvigorated by the flipping of the House, and ready to take our issues to the people we elected to represent us. We've even written a Mission Statement so it's clear that we're involved with many issues that affect the healthcare of our national, state, and local communities, including immigrants.

We also have an opportunity to work with the nationwide HEALTHCARE-NOW!  They are allied with National Nurses United. The plan is to kick-off this lobbying movement with BARNSTORM events across the country. We would like to participate with our own Barnstorm event, but need more activist members to help us organize it. This is a major effort and we would be an important part of a big voice on our healthcare issues.

We will explain more at our next meeting -- Feb . 7th from 4 to 5:30 at the Jefferson County Library in Port Hadlock. If you want to make a difference in healthcare public policy, this is your chance. We look forward to seeing new faces at our next meeting.

Let's Barnstorm together!!!! Call Linda at 360-385-0319 for more information.
