From  the  Pastor's  Desk:

Counter-cultural is the culture and lifestyle
of those people who reject or oppose the dominant values and behavior of society. We may underestimate the extent to which Jesus was counter-cultural in his time on this earth. We are told how counter-cultural our faith truly is. In a world that holds up competition, success, and security as outstanding in earning the good life, the love of God stands as a challenge to these very ideals. Who has not felt the urge to win? To overcome? To secure power or safety?

While not bad in and of themselves, the urge to win, overcome, and secure power or safety can become hollow and empty, if not completely misguided.
In the Book of Micah, “God delights in showing clemency (compassion and mercy)” (7:18), and “casts all our sins into the depths of the sea” (7:19).
Since the beginning of time, God has always been creative and forgiving. The love story of God and humans is one of God’s embrace and guidance of humanity. If we are to show the love of God, where do we begin?
To whom do we extend this love?

In Matthew’s gospel, Jesus provides an answer.

“While he was still speaking to the crowds, his mother and his brothers were standing outside, wanting to speak to him. Someone told him, ‘Look, your mother and your brothers are standing outside, wanting to speak to you.’ But to the one who had told him this, Jesus replied, ‘Who is my mother, and who are my brothers’?” (12:46-48).
What might seem like a slight to those closest to Jesus is perhaps the most pressing question of our time, maybe even of every time: “Who is my mother and my brother? In other words, “Who is my neighbor?” “Who is our neighbor?”

“And pointing to his disciples, Jesus said, ‘Here are my mother and my brothers! For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother’ (Matthew 12:49-50)” .
With an outstretched hand, Jesus welcomes all who do the Father’s will. The fullness of our Christian faith cannot exist apart from the faith community, just as the Holy Spirit is the Love between the Father and the Son (one God, three Persons). May we regard each other as brothers and sisters in Christ, and so bring to our world an awareness of God, the Father’s unfailing Love.
