         Saint Spotlight:

Saint Robert Bellarmine – With our religious education program beginning, this is a good time to ask St. Robert Bellarmine to pray for us.  Saint Robert is a patron saint of catechists, and catechumens (an adult preparing for baptism in the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults).  Saint Robert Bellarmine is one of the Church’s great apologists.  Born in Tuscany, Italy, in 1542, he entered the Jesuits in 1560 and was   renowned for his preaching even before his ordination in 1570.  After years of study and teaching, he was made Professor of Controversial Theology at the Roman College.  Robert’s many roles included reviser of the Latin Vulgate Bible, advisor to Galileo, author of two catechisms, director of the Roman College, leader in the Catholic Reformation, head of the Vatican library, and theological consultant to the Holy See.  Appointed cardinal in 1599 and archbishop of Capua in 1602, he was greatly loved as a pastor.  He died in 1621, was canonized in 1930 and declared a Doctor of the Church in 1931.

From  the  Pastor's  Desk:

“Let Christ in” or “Let Go, Let God” –

We all have days where we are poor, and days when we are rich. We have days when we are hungry and times when we are satisfied. Times of weeping and times of laughing and times when we are admired and those when we are hated. In Luke 6:20-26, Jesus invites us to not hold on too tightly to any of them.

He invites us to not get too attached when things are going well, and everyone loves us. Tomorrow could be the opposite; the old “Palm Sunday/Good Friday” experience.

Today may be filled with suffering and pain, but tomorrow or next week things can change. Our time on earth is temporary. These joys and sorrows are momentary, but what do we do with the reality that in our world today, there are the incredibly, chronically poor and suffering?

It is a tension of our time. Live these times with compassion and love and work for change with and through Christ but hold all things lightly or loosely. Saint Paul tells us, “For the present form of this world is passing away” (1 Cor. 7:31), minute by minute, day by day. Do we hear an invitation, as we walk through our day, to notice what we hold tightly to? Our reputation, wealth, suffering? How are we being invited to loosen our hold and let Christ in?

An important part of the work of the church
is to care for the poor.
On Thursday,
September 27th, at the 6:30 pm Mass, the feast day of St. Vincent de Paul, we will gather to pray for the needs of the poor.  Members of the
St. Vincent de Paul Society encourages everyone to join with us at this celebration to collectively give thanks to God for the generosity of many who reach out to serve the poor.  Pictou County Food Bank, Shepherds Lunch Room, Helping Hands, Service Clubs, Pictou County Fuel Fund, Roots for Youth, to name a few.  Come join us at Eucharist as we pray to our Lord to continue to shape us into the People of God.

Catechist:        Our Lady of Lourdes Parish is looking for catechists.  The Diocese of Antigonish describes a catechist as one who teaches and passes along the faith to children, young people and adults.  A catechist ought to be a mature Catholic who has shown, by their Christian living, that they have taken their faith seriously.  They need to feel comfortable working with groups of people, especially the young.   The Diocese has a Protocol.  So, catechists need to complete a volunteer information form with references; a criminal record check and a vulnerable sector check and read and sign a covenant of care document.  A catechist is responsible for taking advantage of formation opportunities provided by the parish/diocese.  If you are interested in becoming a catechist, please contact our religious education coordinator, Laurena Greencorn.  To meet the requirements of the Diocesan Protocol, please contact Fr. Barrett.

What is Children’s Liturgy?    The Vatican II Directory for Masses with Children (1973) has provided the guiding principles for The Sunday Liturgy of the Word for Children Series since its origin in 1989. The Directory fulfills the Constitution of the Sacred Liturgy which promotes adapting the liturgy to various cultures and communities.  Serving the spiritual needs of children, the Directory recommends inviting children to a separate Liturgy of the Word in a setting not too distant from the parish assembly. (DMC #17, 38) “By virtue of their baptism,” Father Matthew observes, “children have a right to hear God’s Word in language they can understand.”  Is this possible to do at Our Lady of Lourdes?  Would our children be better able to deepen their faith and become more engaged in liturgy?  Let’s give this some thought over the coming months.  Stay tuned for more information in our weekly bulletins.  Inserts from © 2016 Treehaus Communications, Inc. will be provided for our reflection.

Catechesis on the Family:
The Dicastery for Laity, the Family and Life is offering a free digital series of seven catechesis on the family on its website

Viola's Place is excited to be moving forward in achieving its goal of reopening the former homeless shelter under the framework of Viola's Place Society. We have set a tentative opening date of October 1st but we are hoping that this can be achieved before this time. When we open depends on how quickly we can organize volunteers
and fill our volunteer schedule.
Viola's Place is also in need of food items for the shelter. These can be non perishable or items to be frozen at this time and can be dropped off to 189 Marsh Street N G at the above dates and times! Or if these times are not convenient someone will be at Viola's Place

Dear brother priests, deacons and laity,
As you are probably aware the new season for TV Mass for Shut-Ins will begin the first Sunday after Thanksgiving Weekend in October 2018 (October 14th). I am happy to say that the month of October is already booked up.  Looking for November and beyond.  We are in need of priests, deacons, parishes, choirs and groups to come forward to celebrate Mass.  We are the longest running TV program on CTV in Canada.  SO many depend on this Mass for Spiritual nourishment every week.  I receive SO many letters thanking our diocese for this Mass.  Please contact Mae Rowe and book a weekend live or taped.

I would like to invite you and your parish (or group such as CWL, KOC, etc) to come celebrate the Mass.  I also want to invite our retired priests to come on Mass for
Shut-Ins.  I would love to see priests outside of the CBRM to come.
We broadcast live on Sundays.
If that day is not possible for your parish or group we can pre-tape the Tuesday before at 6:30pm
at the CTV Studio on George Street, Sydney.
We need Parish Priests, parish communities and groups to book a weekend Mass as soon as possible.  Last year we did very well but it was a slow start.  I ended up presiding at many Masses, we had to find congregations and ask choirs to come in and assist us.
So it is my hope that we will have many weekends booked before we begin in October 2018.
Thank you for the support you give to Mass for Shut-Ins.  I look forward to working with you and your parish or parish group in the near future.  Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.  My Glebe House number is 902-562-9810
For bookings please email or phone (902-539-6188 extension 222) Mae Rowe at the Pastoral Center

May faith shine forth in them.
May they be concerned only for the salvation of souls.
May they be faithful to their vocation.
May their hands know how to bless.
May they burn with the love of You and Mary.
May all their steps be for the glory of God.
May the Holy Spirit possess them, and give them his Gifts and
               fruits in abundance.
Let us pray:
O God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, you are the soul and the life of the Church.  Hear the prayers we offer for priests and deacons.  We ask this through the Immaculate Heart of Mary, their protector and guide.  AMEN

Words for the Week:

Without the right to education there is no real freedom, which allows every person to be the protagonist of their own destiny!   May the Virgin Mary help us abandon ourselves with joy to God’s plan for our lives.                God never goes back on His love! Let us involve ourselves in our relationship of love with Jesus and we will be able to perform good works that have the fragrance of the Gospel.
