         Saint Spotlight:

Saint Gregory the Great (September 3rd) –

Saint Gregory was born about the year 540 into a wealthy Roman family.  After brief but distinguished service as Chief Magistrate of Rome, Gregory resigned to become a Benedictine monk and used his great wealth to establish several monasteries.  In 578 he was ordained deacon and sent to Constantinople as papal ambassador.
In 586 Gregory was recalled to Rome and became abbot.  Four years later he was elected pope.  His charity in feeding starving Romans, his protection of Jewish rights and his political diplomacy helped him earn the title “Great”.
Several centuries after his death, Gregory was credited with developing Gregorian chant, although this remains disputed.  His is known as the Apostle of England for sending missionaries there, including Augustine of Canterbury.
Gregory, who died in 604, is a Doctor of the Church.

From  the  Pastor's  Desk:

Where is the Love?

In Saint Paul’s First Letter to the Corinthians, the community is told:
“But God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong.  God chose what is low and despised in the world, things that are not, to reduce to nothing things that are, so that no one might boast in the
presence of God”   (1 Corinthians 1:27-29).

In Matthew 25:14-30, we see that in Jesus’ Parable of the Talents the foolish, weak and lowly servant gets punished for not thinking like the smarter and stronger servants.  In Matthew’s gospel, the Parable of the Talents is one in a series of parables about the Last Judgement.  The Parable of the Talents is preceded by the Parable of the Ten Bridesmaids (Matthew 25:1-13), and it’s followed by the Parable of the Judgement of the Nations (25:31-46).

If we read the Parable of the Talents carefully, we will see that Jesus tells his audience that the master entrusted his possessions to his servants according to their ability:
one servant got 5 talents, another 2, and another just 1.
The first two servants doubled their talents, whereas the third one just buried his and did not do anything with it.  The first two servants are compensated with a share in the master’s wealth, and praised by their master
“Well done, good and trustworthy servant;
you have been trustworthy
in a few things, I will put you in charge of many things;
enter into the joy of your master” –
(Matthew 25: 21 & 23);
however, the third one was called “wicked and lazy” (Matthew 25:26), and thrown “into the outer darkness” (Matthew 25:30).

Now, where is the love and understanding for the foolish, weak, low and despised that Paul talks about in his First Letter to the Corinthians in this Parable of the Talents?

Paul’s message is about not thinking too much of ourselves but trusting in the one who called us
“Let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord”
(1 Corinthians 1:31).
The message is one of trust, not one of fear and resignation.  The third servant failed to trust that his master gave him one talent because he saw potential in him.  The third servant just looked at himself as foolish, weak, lowly and despised and out of fear of failure, he buried the talent.

RELIGIOUS  EDUCATION  NEWS

I hope everyone enjoyed our beautiful hot summer!

Soon our students will be heading back to school.

Thus, we are taking this opportunity to introduce our

2018-2019 Religious Education Program

so that our schedule can be incorporated

into the students' school curriculum.

Our current Religious Education program (approved by

the Diocese of Antigonish) is in it’s third year and has

established successful results to date.  This positive

outcome is greatly due to the program's Manual text

book content and step by step instructions that allow

our instructors' to teach with ease and confidence.

The student workbooks provide various fun ways for

our young Catholics to discover their Faith on each

grade level.

Workbooks will be provided for each student.

Wildfires in Telegraph Creek, BC – Urgent Appeal for Aid

Your Eminences / Your Excellences’,

As you may have already heard, there have been wildfires in Telegraph Creek, British Columbia, that have severely impacted the community, including the total loss of the church building and rectory. Gratefully, there have been no deaths since the residents have been evacuated.

On behalf of the Most Rev. Héctor Vila, I am forwarding to you a copy of his letter dated 8 August 2018. In his letter, Bishop Vila gives an update of the situation and requests aid, whether through prayer, material assistance, or provision of services, especially from the neighboring dioceses/eparchies and communities.

Sincerely yours in Jesus with Mary,

Msgr. Frank Leo, Jr.

General Secretary

Statement by the Canadian Conference
of Catholic Bishops
on the findings of the
Pennsylvania Investigating Grand Jury

Catholics  across  our  country  are  rightly  ashamed  and  saddened  regarding  the  findings  of  the Pennsylvania  Investigating  Grand  Jury.  With Cardinal  Daniel  DiNardo,  President  of  the  United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, we reiterate the profound sadness that we as Bishops feel each time we learn about the harm caused as a result of abuse by Church leaders of any rank.
The  Bishops  of  Canada  treat  with  great  seriousness  instances  of  sexual  abuse  of  minors  and
inappropriate conduct on the part of all pastoral workers – be they fellow Bishops, other clergy, consecrated persons or laity.
National guidelines for the protection of minors have been in place in Canada since 1992, which dioceses and eparchies across the country have applied in their local policies and protocols. This fall, the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops will launch updated and expanded guidelines
promoting  the  safeguarding  of  minors  and  increasing  accountability  and  transparency  within Church leadership.
In communion with Pope Francis, the Bishops of Canada want victims to know that the Church is  on  their  side.  Those  who  suffer  are  the  Church’s  priority,  and  the  Church  wants  to  listen  to them and to learn from them.
The Catholic Bishops of Canada understand well how much these crimes can shake the faith and the  spirit of believers.  We  hope  and  pray  that  the  Catholic  faithful  will  assist  all  of  us  in  every way  to  create  safe  and  respectful  environments  for everyone,  especially  minors  and  vulnerable
adults in the Church and in all of society.

I am happy to say that the month of October is already booked up.  Looking for November and beyond.  We are in need of priests, deacons, parishes, choirs and groups to come forward to celebrate Mass.  We are the longest running TV program on CTV in Canada.  SO many depend on this Mass for Spiritual nourishment every week.  I receive SO many letters thanking our diocese for this Mass.  Please contact Mae Rowe and book a weekend live or taped.

I would like to invite you and your parish (or group such as CWL, KOC, etc) to come celebrate the Mass.  I also want to invite our retired priests to come on Mass for
Shut-Ins.  I would love to see priests outside of the CBRM to come.
We broadcast live on Sundays.
If that day is not possible for your parish or group we can pre-tape the Tuesday before at 6:30pm
at the CTV Studio on George Street, Sydney.
We need Parish Priests, parish communities and groups to book a weekend Mass as soon as possible.  Last year we did very well but it was a slow start.  I ended up presiding at many Masses, we had to find congregations and ask choirs to come in and assist us.
So it is my hope that we will have many weekends booked before we begin in October 2018.
Thank you for the support you give to Mass for Shut-Ins.  I look forward to working with you and your parish or parish group in the near future.  Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.  My Glebe House number is 902-562-9810
For bookings please email or phone (902-539-6188 extension 222) Mae Rowe at the Pastoral Center Mae@dioceseofantigonish.ca

Words for the Week:

If the Lord has gifted you with riches, it is in order to do lots of good things for others in His name.
Dear Mothers, be like Saint Monica and never give up. Pray unceasingly for your children. May God’s blessing come down upon all your families, so that they may be places of love and forgiveness.
To pray is the first missionary task of every Christian.
It is also the most effective.
