Father John Writes . . .

Angels and Critters  You are invited to two very different parties. On September 29th Bishop Lambert will dedicate our new elevator! We will be observing the Feast of St. Michael and All Angels, and in the gospel we will hear Jesus say, "You will see angels descending and ascending on the son of man." We will not be naming our elevator "son of man" though I think some angels have already ascended and descended on it. We will be celebrating that Jesus is for us the one who connects heaven to earth, and earth to heaven, human to divine, and divine to human. Our elevator though it does not stop in heaven does connect us with all sorts of new possibility for service. It is my sincere hope that our building becomes very busy with people enjoying loving fellowship, engaging study and worship, and active compassionate service to our community. Come bless us with your presence at the blessing of the elevator.

The other party will be filled with Critters. We will bless the animals on Saturday, October 6 at 12 Noon. We choose to do it at that time because it is near the feast day for St. Francis of Assisi (October 4th) and he is the patron saint of the environment and of animals. Also, did you know, St. Elizabeth was a third order Franciscan? Also, did you know she is the patron saint of third order Franciscans? (The third order of the Franciscans is comprised of lay people who live out their vows in daily life.)

I also love animals and I have a little story to illustrate it. Candidates for ordination have to take examinations called GOE's (General Ordination Exams). I made a very poor mark on my pastoral theology examination because, in the words of my examiner, "although the candidate showed an adequate theological understanding of why he should not anoint a [grieving man's] dog, he indicated a willingness to do it anyway!" All I can do is say, "Busted". However, the examiner did fail to note that I had actually offered a theological argument why I should anoint the Dog. I wrote our theology is too anthropocentric, which means we are too focused on human beings. As I read scripture God intends us to live in harmony with all living things, and even inanimate things. Thus this Blessing of the Animals, October 6th at Noon gives us a great opportunity to celebrate that relationship.

Have a blessed week everyone, and I'll see you at two parties in the coming weeks!
