Father John Writes . . .

What does it mean to "be rich toward God"  This week we will be reading about a wealthy man who spent much of his life force accumulating wealth so that he could lay back and relax. Yet sadly, all his life was spent doing that, and his life ended. Jesus concludes his story with a proverb, which is unusual for Jesus who usually leaves the interpretation of the story to his readers. Jesus says, "So it is with those who store up treasures for themselves but are not rich toward God."

I tend to understand being rich with God as focusing on relationship rather than stuff. I imagine a person delighting in the names of the people in their life as a person rich with God. I imagine a person with a long list of assets to be divided among their heirs as someone rich in stuff. Rich with God seems to me someone who loves praising and thanking God for creation, and who delights in show love to people: consoling those who mourn, celebrating with those who are joyful, feeding those who are hungry, accepting the loving help of others when in need. These are things I would consider show us rich with God.

How would you like to be rich with God? Who might you delight in? Who might you help? Who might you laugh with? Who might you say thank you to for helping you? Or maybe you have a totally different way of seeing "being rich with God". What is the rich with God you are looking for?

See you on Sunday, and have a blessed week,
Father John

We Pray for Those who have Died

This week our community has experienced much loss. We commend to God Stella Christopher, David Hughes, Elizabeth "Lisa" Skelly and Molly McQuire. Please keep them, and their families in your prayers. For those whose services will be here at St. Elizabeth's we will send out a parish email as soon as we know the arrangements. May they rest in peace.

Lord Jesus Christ, by your death you took away the sting of death: Grant to us your servants so to follow in faith where you have led the way, that we may at length fall asleep peacefully in you and wake up in your likeness; for your tender mercies' sake. Amen.
