Loss Control Inspections: April 29 to May 3
Every year, Insurance & Risk Assessment and the U of A’s insurer conduct "loss control" inspections of randomly-selected campus spaces to identify physical hazards that could result in injury or property loss, including potential loss of valuable research.
This year, inspections will take place April 29 to May 3. If we visit your work space you can expect us to identify ourselves, wear appropriate personal protective equipment, and leave a message to tell you we were there. We'll be looking for hazards such as obstructed emergency exits and the use of extension cords for permanent equipment.
We also want to recognize outstanding examples of safe work spaces. Review this list of hidden hazards and then look around your work space for those or other safety concerns. Take steps to remedy them and you could be on our list of our gold-star spaces!
One of the most common hazards identified during 2018 inspections was wedged-open fire doors. Openings in fire separations allow fire to spread more quickly through a building, increasing the risk of injury and property damage. If you see a fire door wedged open, please close it and take steps to inform all space users that it must stay closed. Make your space a wedge-free zone!
