What's a C.L.O.?

University of Alberta Protective Services (UAPS) now employs a Community Liaison Officer (C.L.O.), whose role is to partner directly with various Ancillary Services units, and particularly with Residence Services. Peace Officer Ken Chan, a 10-year member of UAPS, is the new C.L.O. and began providing dedicated support to Ancillary Services in September 2018.

Working with biological materials?

Government regulations for work with and transfer of biological materials are increasingly stringent. "Regulated" biological materials now include 1) those that are pathogenic or cause other harmful effects, and 2) those that have the potential to be or to act as a carrier of a biohazardous agent.

Help Environment, Health & Safety (EHS) to help you: if you work with biological materials, review this document to understand how to ship, receive, and otherwise transfer substances.

For more information about managing hazards in the workplace, visit the EHS website.

Fall reminder from Insurance & Risk Assessment

Happy fall! With the changing weather at this time of year we tend to see an increase in insurance claims, from slips and trips to automobile collisions. Please remember to be careful and be sure to report any loss or damages to university property as soon as possible through the Insurance & Risk Assessment (I&RA) claims page.

EHS Committee Mini Conference

More than 120 Environment, Health, and Safety (EHS) committee members gathered at Lister Centre on October 25 for a morning of education and collaboration. Participants heard from a former Westray miner, learned about psychological hazards, and worked through scenarios based on recent changes to Alberta Occupational Health & Safety (OHS) legislation.

Missed the event or want to refresh your memory? The presentation is now posted on the event website.

Cannabis is legal now, but is it insured?

It is now legal to possess and use cannabis in your home, but don’t forget to check with your personal insurance company to understand coverage, limitations, exclusions and/or potential changes to your homeowner’s policy.

Not sure what cannabis legalization means for the U of A? Learn about U of A regulations here.

Safety & Contractor Management

Supervisors! If you hire contractors to conduct work at the university, you are responsible to ensure that their work is compliant with OHS legislation.

Examples of contractors at the U of A include:
  • Construction workers
  • Cleaning personnel
  • Service, supply, and maintenance workers
  • Professional service providers
To learn more about contractor management, take the Supervisory EHS Professional Development program.

Christmas is coming!
