Founded in the summer of 2015, ELPIDA Youth is a subdivision of the ELPIDA Association of Friends of Children with Cancer, aiming to raise awareness and support the wellbeing of children suffering from neoplastic diseases. The all-female founders channel their passion through creative fundraising events.

Mapping out a bright future for the association

The last two years have seen ELPIDA Youth kick into high gear, ticking off goals and mapping out a bright future for the nascent association. The highlight of their goodwill trajectory has certainly been the unveiling of the first floor of the ELPIDA Guesthouse, fully renovated in just a few months’ time. But you’d have to check out the full roster of their family-friendly events to get the big picture…

The Boss Baby Avant Premiere

On April 2nd, ELPIDA Youth invited movie buffs to "The Boss Baby" Avant Premiere at the Village Cinemas multiplex in The Mall Athens, an inclusive event for the entire family, elevated into an unforgettable experience.
The animated comedy about how a new baby's arrival impacts a family was prefaced by Princess Tatiana, who briefly presented ELPIDA Youth’s trajectory so far and actor Panos Mouzourakis, who voiced the main character in Greek.
The screening, courtesy of local distributor ODEON, was an initiative of Katerina Tsanga Kefalogianni, Managing Director for 20th Century Fox titles, who conceived and organized this Sunday afternoon family outing.
The film, which has already become and international box office sensation, was a treat for everyone who attended and even won some lucky members of the audience Boss Baby memorabilia during a “lucky seats” ruffle, although no one left empty handed thanks to a generous supply of goodie bags.
The event was kindly sponsored by ODEON, 20th Century Fox, DreamWorks, Christodoulou Family, Tsanos, ID Bar, Authorwave and Era Nuts.
ELPIDA Youth Valentine's Dinner

After nearly two years, Valentine’s Day was the perfect time for ELPIDA Youth’s friends and supporters to express their appreciation for the association’s accomplishments.
The Baraonda Music Hall was transformed into a romantic dinner venue for 400 guests, while seminal composers Giorgos Hatzinasios and Giorgos Theofanous presented their greatest hits with a little help from six talented performers.
The dinner was attended by ELPIDA President and UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador, Marianna V. Vardinoyannis and her husband Vardis Varnidoyannis, the ELPIDA Board of Directors and a long list of celebrity guests.
Pop sensation and ELPIDA Youth ambassador Sakis Rouvas took to the stage to perform one of Theofanous’ songs he dedicated to his beloved wife, former model Katia Zygouli.
ELPIDA guesthouse renovation

The refurbishment of the ELPIDA Guesthouse was arguably ELPIDA Youth’s most important achievement to date, revealing the finished first flour within a few months’ of the project’s initiation.
The Guesthouse opened its doors in 1999, offering complimentary hospitality to out-of-town families, whose children were being treated in oncology clinics. So far, the Guesthouse has hosted over 1700 families from all over the country, partially alleviating the insecurity following cancer diagnosis, while fostering a sense of community.
ELPIDA Youth worked closely with Mr. Giorgos Stamatakis, who oversaw construction and made sure every single element was kid friendly and functional, while CocoMat donated the bedding.
The modernized environment is a testament to the Association’s lifelong dedication to improving ailing children’s emotional well-being, which is an integral part of their journey towards recovery.
ELPIDA Youth Christmas Party

Goldenport Shipmanagement and Chartworld Shipping Corporation hosted a Christmas cocktail party at The Blender Gallery in Glyfada, to help raise awareness for ELPIDA Youth. A very special art raffle, featuring original artworks donated by artists Yiannis Kottis, Katherine Vafias and Kitsa Angelakos, boosted donations and added an element of surprise to a glamorous evening.
The prizes were won by guests representing three out of many maritime companies attending the function in support of the cause. A second raffle, featuring prizes by Aria Hotels, Lalaounis and BMW Spanos, raised another round of donations, while most guests brought gifts for the children currently receiving treatment at the ELPIDA Oncology Hospital.
By the end of the evening, The Blender Gallery's brightly lit Christmas tree was surrounded by more than 100 presents. All proceeds from the event went directly to the refurbishment of the ELPIDA Guesthouse.

ELPIDA Christmas Bazaar

ELPIDA Youth made a splash at the annual ELPIDA Christmas Bazaar, organized at the Theoxenia Palace Hotel in Kifisia for the second year in a row. Holiday shoppers spent two fun days roaming around the bazaar stalls, offering an interesting variety of designer and handcrafted goods, made by the patients’ families in collaboration with skilled volunteers.
The ELPIDA Youth stall, enthusiastically run by the committee members, was almost sold out, offering an exclusive selection of jewelry, scented candles, home décor items and holiday treats at surprisingly affordable prices.
Every single item was handmade by the members, while the Christmas tree decorations turned out to be one of the bazaar’s most sought-after pieces and nearly sold out!
During the annual pre-Christmas event, Veta & Laura Tsoukalas hosted an exhibition of Marina Vernicos' photography, depicting unique and extinct corals, in honor of the founder of L'Object. An auction of bespoke VST items was among the highlights of the evening, whose proceeds were all donated to ELPIDA Youth.
The Margi Farm Family Day Out

The Margi Farm, a sustainable 20-acre paradise in Kalyvia, Attica, invited kids and their families to experience the joys of natural farming, just 40km outside of Athens. This original fundraiser, organized in support of ELPIDA Youth’s therapeutic summer camp program (scheduled to kick off in mid-2017), encouraged young visitors to get to know the farm animals and explore the fruit trees and vegetable patches, that would later furnish their lunch.

Kids were involved in a variety of creative games, sports and even tried their hand at ceramics, while their parents shopped for fruit, pastries, T-shirts and organic produce at the open-air ELPIDA Youth bazaar, while sampling a selection of local wines. The Margi Farm Family Day Out culminated in a delicious BBQ lunch and raffle, coordinated by pop singer and ELPIDA Youth ambassador, Sakis Rouvas, along with his wife and children.
Book Presentation: "Suite Home Escape" by Tonia Vasilopoulou

November 2015 saw ELPIDA Youth join forces with cosmopolitan wordsmith Tonia Vassilopoulou, who chose to celebrate her book launch at St. George Lycabettus’ rooftop restaurant, marking another seminal occasion: her eclectic hotel’s 40th anniversary.
Her coffee table book “Suite Home Escape”, released by Fereniki Publications, is based on her globetrotting blog of the same name, offering a collection of unique accommodation suggestions and tips for the discerning traveller.
Hotels are selected on the basis of originality and hospitality standards, while cultural heritage always weighs in heavily. All proceeds from the book sales are donated to ELPIDA Youth, whose committee, friends and supporters joined the hostess for drinks by Michelin starred Chef Jérôme Serres to celebrate her big day.
Expectations exceeded!

Marianna Goulandris, founding member of the ELPIDA Youth Committee, and her husband Filippos Lemos, on the occasion of their recent wedding, urged quests to make a donation to the ELPIDA Youth cause in place of a wedding present. Their initiative had a great impact and the amount donated in support of children suffering from neoplastic diseases and their families, exceeded expectations.
ELPIDA Youth is all about community and working together in the spirit of charitable giving. Members are highly encouraged to share their thoughts and ideas with the founding committee, as they work towards organizing the next ELPIDA Youth events.
Don't forget to spread the word, as recruiting new volunteers and ELPIDA Youth friends is of vital importance, now more than ever.
