Featured Photographer

Michael Thorn

This month's featured photog is one of my favorite photographers,  the awesome Michael Thorn.  Michael did a WONDERFUL zine workshop for EBPCO a few months ago.  Sadly, Michael has moved away from the Bay Area, so you won't see him in our mosh pits any time soon.  But we are very proud to feature his work, and to wish him the very best of luck in his new home.  Follow his work here.

Michael sez:
what is my process? do i have a process? do i just point and shoot? fundamentally i think of what i do as being no different than street photography. i'm just looking to capture a moment and provide you with a feel of a time and space--it just happens to be punk bands rather than a busy street. for me, i don't care if you like the music or have ever heard of the bands--its the energy, the sweat, the passion--thats what i want you get and feel. this is why when i shoot, i get as close as possible even if it means getting knocked around by the swirling sea of thrashers or kicked in the head by a stage diver. at the end of the day i just spend a lot of time thinking about these two capa quotes when shooting:

'if your pictures aren't good enough, you aren't close enough" AND "the pictures are there, and you just take them"

A note from Vince:  Michael shoots most of his work with a 28mm lens, which means he is very close indeed!

You're the Big Shot!

Dear Photo Friends,

Fluff up the ball gown and dust off the tux, because opening night for EBPCO's first-ever juried exhibition is right around the corner!  Join your photographic friends on Thursday, Nov. 1st from 6-8pm at beautiful Panorama Framing in Oakland, CA for the opening night of this exciting show.  You'll see excellent photography representing a variety of voices,  techniques and styles, but most importantly we'll be together celebrating our wonderful creative community that is EBPCO.  There will be music, refreshments, and a RAFFLE!  I'm looking forward to spending this wonderful evening with you.

And did someone say after-party?  I'm thinking The Alley...

Photographically yours,
Vince Donovan
