FORWARD this newsletter

To all my customers and colleagues, I would like to thank you for all your support throughout the year...

As a new, small business, I feel blessed to have been able to work with so many creative businesses and individuals this year, and to have been trusted with supporting you in delivering your events and stories to the world - no matter how big or small a part I played.

If you are anything like me, this time of year is one for reflection and planning. I hope the past year has been filled with challenges overcome and goals achieved, and may 2020 bring you continued successes,  and exciting, new challenges and opportunities!

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Something to Listen to Over the Break

I really enjoyed Season 2 of the Lumina Podcast by AFTRS and think it has some valuable information for creative professionals in times of change:

"As the economy changes, the value of creative work is increasing. Over five episodes, you’ll learn how to spot creative opportunities in non-creative business, hear from people applying storytelling skills to social problems and explore the role creative industries play diplomatically and economically on the world stage."

Need a camera that can survive a hurricane?

The BirdDog A300 is built for fixed installations where exposure to the elements cannot be avoided or predicted. A rock solid housing, filled with nitrogen and even packing a laser beam (just for low light focusing I'm afraid), A300 doesn't fog up, drown or freeze. All this without compromising on image performance. A big Sony sensor and image module feeds BirdDog's full NDI custom silicon with pristine 1080p60 pictures, even in low light conditions, and the 30x optical zoom makes sure you can get up close and personal. Not an NDI environment? No problem. A300 also supports simultaneous SDI output and RS422/232 serial control for traditional broadcast and live production workflows and integration with existing equipment.

Introducing the Rode NTG5 - Short, ultra-lightweight shotgun microphone

Ideal for use in the most demanding recording applications and featuring a revolutionary acoustic design with circular ports replacing the linear slots found in other shotgun mics. It offers unmatched transparency and a more natural, uncoloured sound. Combined with a tightly controlled frequency response, smooth off-axis response, and very low self-noise (just 10dBA), the NTG5 sounds spectacular in a wide variety of applications, particularly location recording and demanding filmmaking scenarios where superlative audio is the imperative. No excuses.

The NTG5 is a boom operator’s dream, weighing a mere 76g and measuring just over 20cm, making it ideal for use on long, demanding shoots. It features RF-bias circuitry to ensure reliable performance in adverse environments, with excellent resistance to high humidity, severe cold, damp, and dust. And it comes with a WS10 deluxe windshield, PG2-R pistol grip, and other accessories – the perfect location recording kit.

AJA Desktop Video v15.5.1, Kona 5 & the new Apple Mac Pro

The AJA Kona 5 needs power. In traditional computers – and some Thunderbolt PCIe Expansion systems (eg. SONNET ECHO EXPRESS IIIE) – this power is supplied via an ATX connector at the back directly from the power supply. In the new Mac Pro however, there is no support for ATX power. Instead, they can pump all the power required through the PCIe slots!

This means that you need to ensure that you order the correct Kona 5 model to suit your system. New Mac Pro owners should ensure they are ordering the KONA-5-R0-S01 supporting PCIe power. Most other systems will likely be using the KONA-5-R0 supporting ATX Power.

Further to this, the new Mac Pro ships with Catalina and as such, AJA have a shiny, new version of Desktop Video Software – V15.5.1. This release adds not just Catalina, but also Metal support, as well as expanded HDR and 8K capabilities!

Powerful Firmware Updates for Ninja V & Shogun 7

The free Atomos 10.4 Firmware update for the SHOGUN 7 is now available. This adds our new asynchronous switching and quad ISO recording features to the class-leading 7” HDR monitor-recorder.

Four camera channels/feeds can be simultaneously recorded as a separate ISOs in either Apple ProRes or Avid DNx to the same high performance SSD drive – ready to edit moments after the shoot has finished.

Atomos have also released the revolutionary RAW over HDMI recording solution for the NINJA V HDR monitor/recorder when combined with the Nikon Z 6 or Z 7 mirrorless cameras. The transformative innovation frees users from the choice between mirrorless features but lower video quality, or full-frame RAW cinema cameras with a budget-busting price tag.
