GENERAL NEWS

ACGN Bi-Annual Meeting and INAD-CI Business Forum in Abidjan, Cote d'Ivoire, 22-24 February 2017
l’Institut National des Administrateurs de Côte d'Ivoire (INAD-CI) hosted the recent ACGN meeting in Abidjan, Cote d'Ivoire from 22 - 24 February 2017.  The meeting was held over three days and was the first ACGN meeting to be hosted in the Africa Francophone region, of which highlights included:
  • A joint business forum hosted by the ACGN and INAD-CI in collaboration with the IFC which showcased the launch of the IFC Corporate Governance Program in francophone West Africa.
  • Half day capacity building workshop on the King IV Code of Corporate Governance and lessons learnt in its implementation.
  • Official signing ceremony welcoming the Namibia Institute of Corporate Governance and Institut Sénégalais des Administrateurs as new members.

New ACGN Affiliate Members Signing Ceremony in Abidjan, Cote d'Ivoire
The ACGN formally welcomed both the Namibia Institute of Corporate Governance and l'Institut Sénégalais des Administrateurs as members at an official signing ceremony held in Abidjan, Cote d'Ivoire, at the INAD-CI Gala Dinner on 23 February 2017.  This brings the number of African countries represented by the ACGN to a total of 19.

Mohammed Jumba appointed as Acting DG / CEO of the Institute of Directors in Nigeria
Mr Mohammed Jumba has been appointed as the Acting DG / CEO of the Institute of Directors in Nigeria with effect from February 2017.  We wish Mohammed all the best in his role and look forward to his further input and participation in the ACGN.
ACGN Welcome IODCCG Nigeria as Affiliate Member
The Institute of Directors Centre for Corporate Governance (IODCCG) Nigeria, as represented by its Executive Director Dr. Nechi Ezeako, were recently approved for ACGN Affiliate Membership.  The IODCCG Nigeria is a subsidiary of the Institute of Directors in Nigeria and is a non-profit company Limited by Guarantee that was incorporated in 2006.  The IODCCG Nigeria strive to be the premier organisation in Nigeria advocating and facilitating the establishment and maintenance of an effective Corporate Governance environment in the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
ACGN Chairman to participate at the annual OECD Global Knowledge Sharing Roundtable
Said Kambi, ACGN Chairman, will be participating as a speaker at the 2nd Meeting of the OECD Global Network on Corporate Governance of State-Owned Enterprises (SOE's), in Dubai from 23 – 24 May 2017 which will be hosted in combination with Hawkamah’s 11th Annual Conference.  The theme of the conference will be "Professionalising Boards of Directors of SOE’s" and hopes to attract a number of key African stakeholders.
 
This event will provide an opportunity for knowledge sharing, networking and promoting of the objectives of the ACGN through collaboration with the OECD.

The International Integrated Reporting Council (IIRC) is a global coalition established to promote communication about value creation as the next step in the evolution of corporate reporting. Their newsletter can be found here.
ACGN Members provide corporate governance insight into sustainability reporting
 The Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) in conjunction with The Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) and Ernst & Young (EY) hosted  a seminar themed ‘Sustainability and Corporate Governance: Building Long Term Value’, on 16 March 2017 in Lagos, Nigeria.

The seminar focused on the joint initiative to integrate sustainability within the Nigerian capital market and engaged on the latest developments in corporate governance, sustainability reporting standards, and ensuring the integrity and quality of sustainability information. The IOD Nigeria and FITC Nigeria provided input from a corporate governance perspective, as panellists at the seminar.
APRM Day Celebrations - 10 March 2017
 The AfricaTThe African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM) celebrated its 14th Anniversary on 10 March 2017 in Johannesburg, which panel discussions included an address by former South African President H.E Thabo Mbeki (also founding father of the APRM). Click for press release.

The APRM Day was preceded by an APRM Methodology Meeting from 8-9 March 2017, which included a special session on the Corporate Governance pillar, where the ACGN was a panellist and was able to provide input on the challenges present and interventions required to support corporate governance development in Africa.

Anti-Corruption Resources
 The AfricaThe GAN Business Anti-Corruption Portal is a collection of free anti-corruption compliance and risk management resources, including e-learning training, country risk profiles and due diligence tools.  Click here to access the Anti-Corruption Learning Course which covers: Facilitation Payments, Gifts & Hospitality and Third Party Risk. The aim of the course is to increase awareness and understanding of the corruption risks out there.

UPCOMING EVENTS

IFC's Global Corporate Governance Network Meeting, 12-13 June 2017, Bangkok

This Network Meeting is a global platform for CG institutes from emerging markets and will provide an excellent opportunity for the institutes and IFC’s project teams to share their experiences and the developments in building and reinforcing the sustainability of CG institutes.
 
The key topics for discussion will be:
  1. Building and expanding institutes’ value proposition. How do institutes maintain and expand their value proposition? How do institutes keep it fresh?
  2. Using IFC Tools and Curricula. What are the recent and upcoming IFC tools available to institutes? Are there emerging trends in terms of training offering?
  3. Fostering international cooperation among institutes. How can institutes leverage each other’s experience? How can regional networks be launched and sustained?
