Welcome to the Blue-Action Autumn 2017 newsletter!

It has been a busy few months for Blue-Action! Many partners have published new papers, attended, conference, and have welcomed new project staff. You can find the details of all of these project happenings below.

We have also confirmed the dates of the 2018 Blue-Action Annual Assembly. It will take place on January 18th-19th 2018 in Bologna, Italy. A preliminary program is available on the project intranet. Be sure to register your attendance using this link.

Several Blue-Action partners attended the 2017 Arctic Circle event in Reykjavik, Iceland, October 13-15. Jens Hesselbjerg Christensen (U Copenhagen) was a panelist in a plenary session on "Arctic Science: from research to practice", while Daniela Domeisen (GEOMAR) participated in the EU Arctic Cluster session on 'Climate change, science, and safeguarding the Arctic environment'. Peter Vangsbo (CKIC) hosted a breakout session highlighting the opportunities offered by climate services, which included presentations from Mark Payne (DTU) and Øivin Aarnes (DNV GL).

News from Blue-Action Partners

  • Vilena Valeeva will present WP5 and the Russian Arctic case study at Arctic Frontiers Science in Tromsø, 23-25 January 2018.
  • Ben Moat presented WP2 research at the ACSIS-OSNAP-RAPID Joint Science Meeting, 19-21 September 2017 in Oxford.
  • Daniela Domeisen, Mark Payne, Øivin Aarnes, and Peter Vangsbo presented Blue-Action at the 2017 Arctic Circle assembly in Reykjavik, Iceland. October 13-15, 2017.
  • A number of Blue-Action partners met to discuss climate tipping points in September in Oxford, UK.
 
  • Didier Swingedouw contributed to the IPCC Special Report on Ocean and Cryosphere in a Changing Climate, to be published in 2019. Didier also discussed Blue-Action during a breakout session of the last IPCC meeting in Fiji.
  • WP2 hosted a virtual meeting Friday 29th September, 2017. A summary of the meeting is available online.
  • Raeanne Miller presented Blue-Action at the UK Arctic Conference, September 19-21, 2017

Vacancies
  • Postdoctoral researcher at WHOI: The Blue Action U.S. partners at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) and National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) are recently funded by the National Science Foundation to contribute to the Blue- Action.  They are looking for a postdoctoral investigator to join their team (http://www.whoi.edu/HR/page.do?pid=21135)! "

Yamal Oil and Gas 2040 Workshop

Ilena Nikitina, Vilena Valeeva, Kathrin Kiel and colleagues working on the 'Yamal Oil and Gas 2040' project are hosting their first scenario planning workshop on 7-8 December, 2017, in Moscow. This series of three workshops aims to explore the future of oil and gas development in the Yamal-Nenet Autonomous Okrug and possible consequences of different scenarios for the region's economy, business, environment, climate, and people. International Workshops on Seasonal to Decadal Prediction

The Second International Conference on Subseasonal to Seasonal Prediction (S2S) and Second International Workshop on Seasonal to Decadal (S2D) Prediction will take place at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) in Boulder, Colorado, USA. September 17th-21st 2018.
