Understanding environmental constraints on Site development - a guide for Architects, Planners and Developers

For architects, planning consultants and their developer clients, understanding the planning approach on contaminated land, flood risk and drainage can be bewildering.

We have developed a handy one-stop shop for guidance on your role, policy, assessing site conditions and managing through the planning application.

SuDS: Biodiversity net gains could become mandatory for developers

The Government is consulting on proposals to place the environment at the heart of new development. This builds on the promises in the legislative updates and the recently published 25 Year Plan. Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) provide a key part of the answer.

Welcome to our January e-newsletter

Our focus of this month's newsletter is the new SuDS mandatory regulations in Wales.
Watch this space for some new CPD webinar topics, which should be starting as soon as next month. More details will be in February's newsletter.

SuDS now mandatory for new development

The new requirements prohibit the commencement of any construction work which has drainage implications until a SuDS system has been approved by a SuDS Approving Body (“a SAB”). All new developments of more than 1 house or where the construction area is 100m2 or more, will require sustainable drainage systems (SuDS) for managing surface water.

Flood Risk Assessments covering a portfolio of multiple sites

GeoSmart’s Portfolio Screening Report is designed to ensure that all potential flood risks at multiple sites have been considered so that appropriate resilience/mitigation measures can be recommended where potential impacts are identified and insurance obtained. The asset risk report provides a classification of the flood risk plus clear and pragmatic advice regarding the nature and potential significance of flood hazards which may be present.

The report is intended for Asset Managers and Risk Managers which can be used to assess the risk posed to properties and buildings. Updates are available to support annual portfolio managers risk assessment and business plan using the latest data.

Groundwater sewer infiltration flood forecasting for the water industry

GeoSmart presented on groundwater and sewer flooding at the ICMLive Discovery Day in Birmingham in December. GeoSmart’s GWSewerFlood is the UK’s first early warning system for sewer flooding due to groundwater inundation for the water industry. Our unique modelling tracks actual borehole levels, weather forecasts and maps risk predictions up to 90 days in advance to help engineers plan and take action to safeguard property and ensure continuity of essential services. The outputs from the forecast can automatically be read into Innovyze’s ICMLive Real-Time Catchment Monitoring software to provide groundwater information inputs for monitoring sewer networks.
