With the March 1 exemption filing deadline in the rearview mirror and the warmer spring months on the horizon, I am grateful for my team’s hard work during our busiest time of the year. We kicked off the year with a busy season of community events and media appearances to help spread the word about homestead exemption and the other valuable property tax exemptions our office administers.
Tallahassee has been buzzing as state legislators converged in the state’s Capitol to carry out their annual legislative duties. This year, along with fellow elected property appraisers, I have been proud to advocate for taxpayers. I am especially appreciative of Sen. Lori Berman and Rep. Gallop Franklin for championing an effort to provide veterans with a total and permanent service-connected disability a prorated refund upon acquiring a new homestead property.
I am also proud to unveil our new mission statement which better defines our approach to public service:
“To provide our community with accurate assessments, exceptional service, and a commitment to public trust.”
This statement will guide our efforts in performing our duty to prepare a fair and equitable tax roll by the early summer months. Our team is just one call or visit away, so please reach out if there’s anything we can do for you.
Yours in public service,
Akin Akinyemi, PhD, RA, CFA, CMS
Leon County Property Appraiser
