Insights for leaders who want to grow their business in the aviation and aerospace sector.
IT PAYS TO COOPERATE!
In business, as in life, it pays to cooperate. This is the main conclusion of game theory. Ultimately, success is not a “zero-sum” game. The history of mankind is one of ever-increasing and ever more complex inter-relationships. And, while competitive instincts do always exist, it is through cooperation that man has evolved as a species. It is rather through cooperation between individuals and organisations that we compete with other individuals, organizations, and even communities and nations.
While cooperation is the process of groups of individuals working or acting together for common or mutual benefit, collaboration takes cooperation to the next level – to achieve a specific goal or objective.
What is different today is that digitization is permeating every facet of our lives, giving way to hyper-connectivity and interconnectivity at increasing speed, facilitating collaboration across borders and industries, and thus radically changing the competitive landscape.
Competing today is increasingly about identifying new ways to connect and collaborate (building your “network equity”) in order to meet new and emerging needs of the customer. And, meeting these needs is achieved through ecosystems powered by digital platforms that allow a set of products and interconnected services to be offered by a variety of companies in one integrated customer experience.
Consumer (B2C) ecosystems tend to concentrate on needs such as travel & hospitality, housing, healthcare and financial services, while B2B ecosystems tend to revolve around particular
functions, like sales & marketing, procurement, operations, or finance. It will happen that as clusters of companies are formed, a blurring of the lines between industries and between retail and institutional markets will result. At the same time, it opens a whole realm of possibilities and opportunities for growth.
This is new and very different from the industry verticals and supply chains we are familiar with. It requires a completely new way of thinking – that of “network thinking”, while placing the customer at the very centre of the user experience and value creation process.
So, how do you go about defining your approach and strategy for growth in this new reality? It starts with what the late Peter Drucker termed self-assessment, by asking the following critical questions:
  • What is our mission? Who is our customer? What does the customer value? What are our results? and What is our plan?
Follow this with further questions of relevance to network thinking, such as:
  • What other firms share our values and vision? Who can support us in our mission? Who can we help in their mission and together create and capture new value? What must we do to be of value to other firms? How do our partners experience our contribution? How do we define success with our partners?
To determine your ecosystem strategy, stay tuned for my White Paper to be released end-March 2020.
NEWS

On February 26th, NAV CANADA announced that it has entered into an agreement with Unifly NV, as strategic technology partner, to deploy a UTM system on national scale that will provide digital services for safely operating and managing drones in Canadian airspace. As a start, it will enable drone pilots to request authorization to fly in controlled airspace by way of a web or mobile application, and help identify where they can and cannot fly, in line with current regulations. The drone ecosystem in Canada is progressively being built up and now will be supported by a digital platform that Unifly is uniquely qualified to provide.

BOOK OF THE MONTH
Malcolm Gladwell is one of the most acclaimed writers today, having published six books that often deal with the unexpected implications of research in the social sciences. In his second book Blink, released in 2005, Gladwell reveals that great decision-makers aren't those who process the most information or spend the most time deliberating, but rather are able to filter out the very few factors that matter.

Interestingly, this is also the key point made by Richard Koch, author of the 80/20 Principle, whom I recently interviewed for my podcast on the launch of his new book Unreasonable Success, and How to Achieve It to be released in June.
