Surgical Syle Mask Kits

At Rainbow Patchwork we have now created a kit and pattern for face masks

The masks we have chosen to make are the surgical style pleated mask. A prototype of this design has been in use in a clinical setting for about 2 months, it has been worn with comfort daily and has been machine washed and dried.

The outer fabric is finely woven 100% cotton batik, the interfacing is polyester non-woven, the wire is flexible plastic coated copper and bias ties are used. The nose wire gives a secure seal. The ties enable a comfortable tighter or looser fit as the situation requires and also allows the mask to fit different sized heads.

You can breathe with comfort through 4 layers: 2 batik and 2 interfacing.

We have four different kits available at $24 per kit. The pattern is included. Each kit makes 3 masks, and all fabric is pre-cut.

The bias I have used is a quality 100% cotton, it is manufactured by “A Day in the Country” in Thailand. It comes in limited colours so fabric to match the bias has been chosen.

Wearing your mask

A mask is only effective if worn properly.

  1. Place the wire on the bridge of your nose and mould it to fit your nose.
  2. Tie the top tie around the back of your head.
  3. Expand the mask by pulling the bottom edge right under your chin.
  4. Tie the lower tie behind your neck.
This is how your mask should look when you are wearing it:
