Downtown Dialogue — What's Up Downtown
In this month's Downtown Dialogue:

Ready for Fall?

After a sizzling summer – hopefully this heat wave is over! – downtown is gearing up for fall and we are kicking it off Labor Day weekend with the Support Local Taste of Louisville. Though we are sad that The Taste of Louisville, Fall Festival and Labor Day Parade are all cancelled this year, we want to encourage everyone to celebrate Louisville by supporting local businesses. It is because of your continued support that downtown is still alive. Thank you for showing your downtown love!

Labor Day Weekend Events

Many businesses are offering Taste of Louisville deals, so be sure to ask about any specials like $$ off an order, free gift with purchase, or special “Taste” discounts.  Treat yourself to a little “taste” of what it’s like to live in Louisville, CO!

Outdoor Dining Update

Main Street Closure Extended!
At the September 1st City Council meeting the Council unanimously voted to extend the current Main St. closure, which was set to expire October 5th,  through October 31st. The three blocks of Main between Walnut and Elm Streets will continue to be closed to thru traffic so the restaurants may continue outdoor dining, which has been essential to their survival in the midst of covid. Both the restaurants and the DBA advocated for this extension and a further extension is expected to be discussed at a future Council meeting. Thank you to all businesses and residents who have supported this initiative so we may keep our beloved downtown restaurants open and recovering!

Faces of Downtown

Wendy Wassom, owner of Old Friends

I moved to Colorado in 1979 from Illinois. I moved out to Colorado for college and skiing! I ended up staying and raising my 2 kids here. Once my kids could drive themselves to their activities, I looked for something to fill my time. I opened Old Friends with my 'old friend' from Illinois who had moved to Louisville a few years earlier. We started as a consignment furniture store. We were selling and delivering furniture all the time! It was hard work and we quickly switched over to gifts. I still have consignments, but on a smaller scale. I have wonderful artists that sell their things in my store.
I became passionate with gifts that my local friends and the community enjoyed buying. I was always a shopper, so I wanted my prices to be reasonable to keep everyone coming back. As my business grew, I filled my store with Colorado things and items that made people smile and feel good.
I love the community of Louisville, the surrounding towns, and I love being a part of it. Old Friends has become a place to bring out of town guests and family, a place to shop for a new baby or find a fun gift for a 50th birthday. Always a place to find socks, the perfect card or a hilarious bar of soap/candle with the perfect saying to fit your mood!
Most people that come into Old Friends, stay a while. We often have a group of people reading our soaps or cards while giggling. We always say that once you visit Old Friends, you become an Old Friend!
I never thought that a fun idea that started with 2 friends, 11 years later, would turn into what Old Friends has become. I owe most of our success to the community of Louisville who, over the years, have made us the place to grab the perfect last minute gift on your way to a birthday party of all ages. Or the place to visit for all your Colorado needs, or just a place to make you smile.
In this scary and crazy time we live in right now, I hope you can come into Old Friends and forget about things for a moment, get a good laugh and make an Old Friend.

Historic Building

The Harney House
620 Grant Avenue

The Harney family from Slovakia owned the home at 620 Grant for about 65 years. The area south of Pine on Grant and Lincoln was home to more than 12 Eastern European households, including the Mudrock, Waschak, Haszier, Strichko and Sirokman families.

John Harney purchased two lots in the Pleasant Hill addition in 1906. John, whose surname appears to have originally been Hornyak, was born in Slovakia. John married Catherine Puskar in Slovakia. Their children Helen, Margaret and Mary were also born in Slovakia, and 5 more children were born in the US. John was a coal miner and died from injuries sustained in the Industrial Mine. John's brother Joseph also came to Louisville and his family was associated with the farm that now constitutes the Harney-Lastoka Open Space.
