Welcome to our last newsletter of the year.

It’s been an exciting year for the Club with lots of improvements to the Racing Tauranga facilities.

The painting of the stand and the building of the viewing terrace were two projects we undertook. The stand was in bad shape and the painting was long overdue. The new viewing terrace has proved to be a great success, providing much need additional space to cope with the popularity of the Christmas at the Races hospitality packages. In fact, it was fully sold for the Christmas at the Races events. It’s already booked for the January 17th meeting, with Mediaworks are using the terrace to host their clients. The viewing terrace offers plenty of scope for events of all kinds and eliminates the cost of hiring a marquee.

The new Winner’s Circle was long overdue and anyone who experienced trying not to spill their drink while being crammed into the little old room when celebrating a win will agree. With the help of Love Racing and Gartshores, we now have a space to be proud of. Hopefully, many of you will get to experience it!

We have a new electronic sign installed at the entranceway thanks to the Reserve Board, and with the closing of Mills Reef, and the generosity of Tim and Linda Preston, we have been able to purchase some new furniture and upgrade our kitchen crockery and utensils to make the event centre a much more viable option. We have also had many more bookings for functions such as school balls, leavers dinners, corporate training, engagement parties and weddings, and we have been confirmed as the base for the 2020 Garden and Art Festival. Watch this space; there’ll more to come on this in the New Year.  It’s very positive that we are starting to use our facilities better and make the racecourse more financially viable.

Many projects are in the pipeline for 2020 including getting quotes and designs for upgrading the Fairway (Members) and Owens Lounges. As well, we have received funding from NZCT and the Racing Development fund to upgrade our irrigation system so the track will be more consistent and safer. This is hopefully going to be done early in the New Year.

May I take the opportunity on behalf of the Board and staff to wish you all a very pleasant festive season and we look forward to seeing you all at the races very soon.

Syndication Update

Ocean Emperor Progeny: Unfortunately, the mare has been unable to get into foal to Ocean Emperor but they have tried one more time so we should know the results soon.

We have another exciting horse ready to syndicate to members and will let you know the details soon. This one is almost ready to run. Watch this space!

Big Win for Jim!

Local Trainer Jim Pender was the star of the show this month when The Real Beel pushed through to win the Group 2 Cal Isuzu Stakes WFA on Saturday, 14 December. Some managed to secure her at odds of $51 to win and we were told that one TAB in Rotorua ran out of money paying out on her, and a certain TAB Trackside presenter, who had tipped her to win, managed a $9000 collect. It's great to see local trainers doing well and with summer racing upon us, we are expecting some more successes locally.
