"We all have an unsuspected reserve of strength inside when life puts us to the test." ~ Isabel Allende, author

Dear Members of The Community Foundation Family,

In this time of uncertainty, there's a fundamental truth that gives us hope - that together we can do extraordinary things. Our community has been coming together to stand up, help out, give back, and heal. Whether that's through donations to our Disaster Support Fund, celebrating doctors and nurses at shift changes, or reaching out to a neighbor to help with groceries, generosity has been helping San Luis Obispo County get through this global pandemic. Together.

Within three weeks of launching, The Community Foundation has raised more than  $200,000 through our Disaster Support Fund to respond to our community needs. We are especially  pleased to welcome support from the Pacific Gas and Electric Company and First 5 San Luis Obispo County as funding partners.

Our deepest thanks to those who have already contributed to the fund. Below you will hear from generous donors about their decision to donate to the Disaster Support Fund, as well as hearing from our agency partners about the impact that our rapid response grants are having across San Luis Obispo County.

All gifts to the Disaster Support Fund are vital during this time, no matter the size, and can be made at www.cfsloco.org. A special thank you to those have have already donated and we invite others to join us in the special time of need. In the meantime, take care and be safe!

Together we are stronger...

Second Round of Disaster Support Grants Awarded

The residents of San Luis Obispo County have shown their support to our most vulnerable populations through donations to the Disaster Support Fund. Those contributions, large and small, are having a positive impact for our community members that are facing the biggest challenges during this pandemic.

So far, the Foundation has awarded more than $63,000 in Disaster Support Fund grants, including $32,900 this week to four organizations that serve our most vulnerable populations with basic needs, including food, shelter, and transportation, and have a broad reach across San Luis Obispo County. Grantees include Community Action Partnership of San Luis Obispo County for family and community support services; Center for Family Strengthening for their Promotores program supporting Hispanic communities; Peoples’ Self-Help Housing for financial assistance to low-income, homeless, seniors and veterans; and Transitions-Mental Health Association for mental health crisis counseling and to provide personal protective equipment to their staff and clients.

Messages of Appreciation

Peoples' Self-Help Housing
"The Foundation is always right there, standing shoulder to shoulder with our community, and with agencies like ours serving on the front lines. This gift will bring immediate relief to our residents who are experiencing immense hardship through job loss, food insecurity and mounting medical bills. Thank you from everyone here at Peoples' Self-Help Housing."
John Fowler, President/CEO

Community Action Partnership of SLO County (CAPSLO)
"We have so many families in need right now, especially with children under age 5 that aren't being helped by other agencies. The grant from the Foundation will help us meet their daily needs of essential items like diapers, infant formula, and nutritious food. We are so thankful for this support.”
Elizabeth "Biz" Steinberg, CEO

Why We Donated to the Disaster Support Fund

"My husband and I decided to donate to the Disaster Support Fund as a way to contribute to community members who are suffering during this crisis. We are over sixty-five, and in order to follow isolation guidelines, we are staying at home. Therefore, we are unable to go out into the community to help. But we do want to share with those in need. At this time, making a monetary donation seemed to be the most effective way for us to help."
