What Do Women Need? - 2020 Report

The Women’s Legacy Fund (WLF) of the Community Foundation has important news to share with our supporters. The Women’s Legacy Fund, together with a generous local donor, recently conducted an extensive needs survey “What Do Women Need?” which was originally developed in 2010 and revised in 2015. This report highlights issues which impact women and girls throughout San Luis Obispo County.

It is no surprise given the high cost of living in our county, an aging population, and increased societal pressure on our youth, there is an ever increasing demand for services. We believe in order to best serve the community, it is critical that everyone have access to information detailing the realities of life here on the central coast for women and girls. This survey is an important resource for determining where funding and increased focus should be.

After reviewing the data, the WLF Advisory Committee has determined the next two years of WLF grantmaking will focus the following issues:

  • Girls' Mental Health: defined as chronic sadness, self-esteem issues, self care, bullying/harassment, and internet safety.
  • Financial Stability for Women: encompassing financial literacy & education, economic independence, support for Latinas, addressing income disparity & food insecurity, senior support, and housing for women.
The survey is currently available for viewing and download on The Community Foundation website and printed copies will be available at the Foundation offices by the end of March. The WLF Advisory Committee is thankful for the community support in completing this important document.
