I have some exciting news that I’ve been anxiously waiting to share with you all!
This coming November, I will be traveling to Abuja, Nigeria to attend and speak at a four-day conference workshop on anti-human trafficking awareness, HT prevention strategy, and capacity building for the local safehouses! The workshop event will be hosted and organized by the MeCAHT (Media Coalition & Awareness to Halt Trafficking) team and the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP).
The hope of this event is to gather and equip government officials, ministry leaders, and workers from approximately ten different safehouses and recovery homes from around different parts of Nigeria. Each home will be represented at the workshop by three staff members: the safehouse director, the house mother, and the safehouse counselor. One of the main goals of this conference is to equip each attendee, safehouse, and agency represented with the tools, knowledge, and skills they need to grow, develop, and maintain optimal levels of sustainability in their fight against human trafficking in Nigeria. My tentative role will be to lead and teach a few of the training sessions, assist with logistical needs, build relationships with the attendees, and offer my help wherever it is needed.
After the conference, I will be attending a three-day BTM (Biblical Trauma Model) follow-up training at the Greater Love Lighthouse Recovery Home for female sex trafficking survivors also in Nigeria. This training event will give me a chance to spend some quality time with the ladies and staff members staying at the home. The follow-up BTM training will be for the +/- 20 staff members, and it will be led/taught by Kyle Miller (LPC - licensed professional counselor) and Founder/Director of Global Care and Response (GCR). Through GCR, Kyle provides local counseling and training in Austin, TX, as well as international counseling and training to trauma workers and trauma survivors who have experienced sex-trafficking, genocide, and disaster crises using the Beatitude Trauma Model based on Jesus’ teaching in Matthew 5:1-16. He's been offering counseling and training remotely to the ladies and staff at Greater Love Lighthouse since 2014 when they first opened!
Over this past month as I've been praying and preparing for this trip, I've experienced several roadblocks that almost made me back out of this trip entirely. However, despite those challenges, God has been so kind and so faithful to miraculously "make a way" through it all. My Nigerian visa has been officially approved and my flights have been booked and paid for in full! Hallelujah! There are still some logistical and financial needs that must be met for the four-day workshop to take place, but we are all trusting God to continue to go before us and pave the way!
I expect this trip to be a special one, and I hope to learn as much as I can from my beautiful friends and ministry partners in Nigeria. I know that I will gain tons of wisdom, insight, and experience from the MeCAHT team, GCR, NAPTIP, and the Greater Love Lighthouse Recovery Home.
During this trip, I hope to pour out every ounce of wisdom, knowledge, and love that I have to help strengthen and empower these brothers and sisters of mine in the fight against human trafficking. I hope to teach and lead well, but I also hope to learn well, serve well, and listen well.
I jotted down some specific prayer requests in the section below so please take a quick second to read through the list so you can join me in prayer during these next few weeks as we prepare for take off...
