We love a good challenge.

Sorry Doc Brown, but if where we’re going is the future, we might need a few roads.

A challenge was presented in September 2018 for the Government of Canada to make all government services available online by 2025. Boy, do we love a good challenge here at CDS.

Public servants across government are working to improve digital service delivery. Not for lack of trying, but we aren’t there yet. We need to put the wind at the backs of these passionate public servants and help them get there with the right tools, teams, and environments.

As part of our mandate to give advice to government on digital service delivery, we’re sharing the beginning of a roadmap to get to that ambitious goal.

A new fund is launching to speed up service improvement in government

Making government services better is exciting, but hard work. Even with great ideas and great intentions, government can’t do it alone. We’re excited to take a run at this problem.

We’re launching an investment fund to finance, test, and help deliver public servants’ ideas for high-impact products or services. It will create opportunities for smaller companies and not-for-profits to access the procurement process by breaking projects into smaller chunks. We want to make it easier for good companies, and good public sector ideas to find each other and test things out quickly.

We’re starting small, and we want to hear from you. Read our blog for more information and how you can get involved.

Shipped: Help Veterans find relevant benefits

As of 2018, only 18% of Canadian Veterans were receiving benefits offered by Veterans Affairs Canada (VAC). There was a clear need to better connect Veterans and their families with the benefits that VAC offers.

For the past year, a team made up of both CDS and VAC staff have worked together to build a benefits finder where Veterans can discover relevant benefits for their specific needs.

In April of 2019, the new “Find benefits and services” went live!

How did we get there?
Check out the product’s documentation for more information on the product, what tech was used to build it, and the user experience principles that guided our work.

We’ve made a generic version of this product that can be adapted for any team’s specific use. (Stealing our work is encouraged!)
