We join you in expressing great disappointment over the decision to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program and what this means for you as students over the next six months and into future. Please know that the entire campus community and my leadership team in Student Affairs are here to support you and care for your well-being. Along with our colleagues at the other UC campuses, the UC Office of the President, and UC Immigrant Legal Services we are focused on understanding all the impacts of this decision and advocating for legislation that provides a permanent solution toward citizenship for undocumented students.
UC San Diego’s Undocumented Student Services (USS) is prepared to be the place where you can obtain resources and support. We are grateful that there are NO CHANGES to California’s AB540 (in-state tuition law) and CA DREAM Act (for access to institutional and state aid) as these are state laws that are not impacted by Federal policies. However, expiring employment authorization documents associated with DACA may impact work-study allocations and Teaching Assistantships, and we are working hard to find solutions. Additionally, UC San Diego continues to provide comprehensive programs and services through Undocumented Student Services including:
-
A full-time professional that serves to coordinate resources for undocumented students;
-
Dedicated physical space for students to gather and learn more about services and resources;
-
No cost legal services provided by UC Immigration Legal Services – a full-time attorney will be assigned to UC San Diego in the upcoming academic year
-
Programming focused on student's psychological well-being and community building
-
Dedicated hotline for students with immigration emergencies to call or text- 619-500-9970
-
Access to research grants
-
Access to loans
Free legal services for UC San Diego students and their immediate families remain available through the partnership between Undocumented Student Services and the UC Immigrant Legal Services Center. Please contact Daniel Alfaro, USS Program Coordinator at (858) 822-6916 for appointment information. Daniel is also available to meet with you in person to talk about your particular situation; book an appointment with him here.
During this time of great anxiety and uncertainty, we recognize academics may be the furthest from your mind. However, many departments across the campus are available and prepared to offer support to our undocumented and mixed immigration status students. We highly encourage you to utilize the university as a resource and support system. We want you here on campus progressing toward graduation, and throughout this journey we are here to support you. Please take advantage of the programs designed to help you and continue to be connected to the Undocumented Student Services office. Undocumented Student Services will be the office in which we communicate further updates and share resources.
