Updates June 14-20

A new milestone was reached this past week. The last house with an exposure concern has come off the watch list.  Currently there are no active COVID-19 cases among people supported by CSS and we are not waiting on test results for individuals or staff. Nurses and teams continue to closely monitor everyone.
The gym schedule has been working very well. Houses are scheduled to come to CSS for one hour during the week and they see no other residences. There’s a strict cleaning schedule after the use of everything including all of the equipment and bathrooms. This week we’ve also introduced knitting groups with Cindy Meredith. We’ve begun with a few houses that had knitting previously on their schedules.
The Marcia D Smith School successfully completed a unique school year thanks to the teachers and parents who were extremely flexible as we adapted to distance learning and other guidelines the state enforced to ensure that we are practicing social distancing. Teachers are currently on a short  break before the Extended School Year begins in July. During this time the residential teams are creating a  more adverse activity for the residential students including social activities through the day. For example residential students will begin implementing weekly themes, and including crafts that students can create and send home to their parents. They are also doing a variety of other activities such as fitness, cooking and sensory while continuing to practice social distancing.
More children will be receiving direct support for summer break and the Extended School Year. In addition, virtual programming continues. Everyone who has been engaging with the current format has stayed safe and they have seen a lot of success. During the town halls we were shown some of the amazing cards that they have made for Father’s day. The current week’s theme is designing superheroes and we look forward to hearing more about everyone’s creativity.
The day program continues to provide direct support services in the home and in the community Sunday through Saturday. Activities included but are not limited to hiking at local parks, cooking in the home as well as participation in Zoom Groups throughout the day. Currently there are 26 individuals receiving direct supports. The teams are taking all the necessary precautions and are following guidelines. Day program attendance is holding at above 90%. This wouldn’t be possible without the families and everyone involved to assist with virtual engagement. This coming week we’ve added Food for Thought on Mondays and Fridays at 11am and have added Zamdance for Fridays.
Five teams were recognized this week during our daily town hall virtual meetings. These spotlights feature the hard work that everyone has done over the last two months as we have had to adapt and change how services are provided while ensuring that everyone’s safety is at the forefront. We visited with Clarks Square, Hendrix, Shipley, Crown and Majestic.  All of the teams featured enjoyed a pizza lunch and received personalized cards thanking them for their teamwork and outstanding care during this crisis.
The DD Supplement is at Risk
Montgomery County Government has asked all departments and agencies to reduce spending in their upcoming budget and the Director of DHHS will be making decisions this week. Write letters now to let decisions makers know that the DD Supplement is not a negotiable line item.
