Updates June 7-13

No news continues to be the best news. It has been over three weeks with no new positive COVID-19 cases for individuals supported by CSS. Several individuals and employees have been tested out of an abundance of caution. Of results received so far all have been negative. We will keep everyone updated. Nurses and teams continue to closely monitor everyone.
This past week we began doing some gym activities using the CSS Gym. There is a cleaning schedule after the use of everything including all of the equipment and bathrooms. There’s one way in and one way out with paths that people have to follow. This allows individuals to get a little bit more activity built into their weekly schedule. Individuals have been happy to have something else out of the house and get some exercise. We’re also exploring some additional options to add to the schedule and will keep you updated.
In the Marcia D Smith School teachers have been finishing up progress notes and students have been gearing up for Autism Waiver and Children’s Summer Programs. A fun new development is that the students have been enjoying swimming! A family has been allowing students to use their private pool. Every safety precaution has been taken as they visit the pool.
The summer is underway in the Children’s Program. MCPS’s last day of virtual learning is scheduled for June 15th. There have been more requests for direct services since the Extended School Year, also traditionally known as summer school, will be virtual this summer and many individuals need more structured activities for the summer months. The teams are exploring more of the community options that are available and reasonable to do in a safe setting.
The day program continues to provide direct support services in the home and in the community Sunday through Saturday. Currently there are 24 individuals receiving direct supports during the week. The teams are taking all the necessary precautions and are following guidelines. The Day Services Team is working with executive leadership and everyone is working towards expanding and safely providing more direct supports for individuals. Day program attendance is holding at above 90%. This wouldn’t be possible without families and everyone involved assisting with virtual engagement.
Five teams were recognized this week during our daily town hall virtual meetings. These spotlights feature the hard work that everyone has done over the last three months as we have had to adapt and change how services are provided while ensuring that everyone’s safety is at the forefront. We visited with Arora Hills, Edgemont, Villa Cove, Blue Jay, and on Wednesday we celebrated the team at That’s a Wrap! That’s a Wrap has gone above and beyond during this health crisis, pivoting from being a restaurant to becoming a supply lynchpin for the residences supported by CSS. All of the teams featured enjoyed a pizza lunch and received personalized cards thanking them for their teamwork and outstanding care during this crisis.
