Mission & Ministry

June 2020: Part 1

Keli Bolton

Mission Support Officer for Children and Young People with Mission Action Planning
Diocese of Southwark

Welcome to our first newsletter since March 2020! As mentioned in my last email, I'll be sending information fortnightly in this format. This is part 1, and part 2 will come later in June. The newsletter has been quite long in the past (because it's crammed with so much good stuff!) but my aim is to keep things as short as possible. You can skip to particular relevant sections as you need to using the quick navigation below left.

All of our resources for this time can be found on our website.

Any safeguarding concerns, please contact the Safeguarding team directly.

Thank you for all you do to walk, welcome and grow your  mission and ministry amongst children and young people.

Open Zoom drop-in
We will be piloting a zoom call every fortnight for anyone (clergy, curate, volunteer, paid worker etc) with questions around CYP at this time. If you have something you want to check out, you can do so at these times, all Tuesdays between 2pm-3pm until the end of June Zoom link.

Doesn't work for you? Don't feel you have to wait for a Zoom call, we're always available by email (Aike, Keli), or you can call my direct line on 0207 939 9479.

Big CYP Survey 2020
In February, we sent out the Big CYP Survey which some of you completed - thanks so much if that was you! Since lockdown we have rewritten the survey to reflect this interesting time and removed many of the former questions. Version 2 will be sent out on Monday and we would be grateful if a parish rep could complete and return it to help us serve you better. Thanks so much.

I'm sure I don't have to tell you what's been happening recently in both America and the UK in relation to Black Lives Matter. We have a new section on the website, devoted to this subject, and we will provide as many resources as we can find. Here's a helpful video particularly for non-minority children to begin to think about racism and current events. It is told from a white perspective so if anyone has any other resources they can recommend, please send them to me.

In response to recent events, a (black) youth pastor in Missouri suggests non-minorities could do the following:
  • Lament
  • If a person of colour ever comes to you mentioning some injustice they felt, believe us and don’t try to explain away what happened immediately.
  • Continue to educate yourself
  • Learn about the black experience
  • Keep speaking to your own kids and students once you have some basic understanding
  • Talk to your white friends about it
  • Get on the mailing list of, and consider supporting, an organization that advocates for social justice, racial equality, etc.
  • Don’t demonise people who do racially charged things

We are putting together some online training and events for 2020/21
We'll let you know when they're available to book
Online holiday clubs: Scripture Union have a free training session on running online holiday clubs on Thursday 18 June.

Living Faith Seminar: Some time ago, Neil O'Boyle (National Director YFC), joined us to explore the theme Under Construction - helping young people build their identity in Christ in today's youth culture. We recorded it and it's finally been edited! Please contact me if you would like a copy.

CYP Webinars: London Diocese run some great webinars on Tuesday lunchtimes 11:30-12:30 and Thursday evenings 20:15-21:00. Click on each day link above to register to join on zoom, or you can follow them on Facebook to either watch live at these times or catch up later. They also have joint morning prayer with 'With' about CYP.
