USO Indiana to Re-Open Indianapolis International Airport Center

Extensive Training Conducted for all Volunteers to Help Keep Military Visitors Safe

Indianapolis, IN (June 1, 2020) – USO Indiana is resuming operations at its Indianapolis International Airport Center following the COVID-19 shut down. The center suspended operations on March 14, 2020 to meet the Governor’s mandate that all non-essential businesses shut down.

“We are very excited to be able to reopen the center so that we can help our military personnel as they travel throughout the country and overseas,” said Jeff Loop, center manager, Indianapolis Airport USO Center, “We have conducted extensive training so that our volunteers can keep our soldiers safe while they take a break at our facility. We want to thank the airport and all of our donors whose gifts pay 100 percent of the operating costs for this facility.”

Dozens of volunteers spend hundreds of hours each year supporting active-duty military at the facility located on the airport’s first floor near the baggage claim carousels. During the shutdown, volunteers performed a deep cleaning of the facility and its kitchen to keep service members and their families safe while visiting the center. In accordance with CDC, all center volunteers are required to wear masks. Some of the other precautions at the center include:
  • Maximum capacity of 15 people at any one time.
  • Furniture arranged to adhere to CDC social distancing guidelines.
  • A new hand sanitizing table has been placed at the entrance to the kitchen.
  • Volunteers will continue to use plastic gloves for food handling and latex/vinyl for cleaning.
At this time, the center will no longer be dispensing blankets or pillows.  To reduce the spread of germs, the facility has removed all commercial magazines and other hardcopy reading materials.  The center will now be open at 8:00 AM until 8:00 PM every day.

The USO Indianapolis International Airport Center serves more than 15,000 service members and their families each year. USO Indianapolis International Airport offers a wide variety snacks, soft drinks and bottled water, hygiene items, PC’s and printer, gaming systems, large screen TV, recliners & lounge chairs and free secure Wi-Fi.

About the USO:
The USO strengthens America's military service members by keeping them connected to family, home and country, throughout their service to the nation. At hundreds of locations worldwide, we are united in our commitment to connect our service members and their families through countless acts of caring, comfort and support. The USO is a private nonprofit organization, not a government agency. Our programs, services and entertainment tours are made possible by the American people, support of our corporate partners and the dedication of our volunteers and staff.

USO Indiana Snapshot:
Throughout Indiana, the USO provides a touch of home to over 100,000 service members and military families who visit our USO Centers annually.  Additionally, the USO offers morale-boosting and family-strengthening programs to service members and their families who are based in Indiana. We also serve those locally-based families geographically separated from loved ones who are deployed or stationed overseas. The USO is here for those who need us the most: our service members and military families; our wounded, ill and injured service members and their caregivers; our service members in transition; and our families of the fallen. Locally, we provide programming around four key pillars: family strengthening; health, wellness, and resiliency; community activities and entertainment; and education, employment, and reintegration. More than 500 volunteers and an Advisory Board help five Indiana-based staff members deliver goodness to our service members and their families year-round.  To join us in this important mission, and to learn more about the USO, please visit Indiana.USO.org or follow us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
