Our democratic system is rigged, and we need to push our Democratic Senators to take action If we are going to remake our democracy into one that works for the people and achieves all of our progressive priorities —we need our members of Congress to use the majority that we built to defend our democracy. THIS IS OUR MOMENT: LET'S SEIZE IT!

Senate Majority Leader Schumer announced that he will be bringing S. 1, the For The People Act, to the floor in the last week of June. We need to do everything we can to make sure it passes, including eliminating the filibuster. Call your Senators now and demand they vote YES on S. 1, the For the People Act, and not let the filibuster get in the way of passage.

We know that we've been sharing information with you about H.R./S. 1 and ending the filibuster for months, but as we close in on six months of the Biden administration and our narrow control of Congress, it's now apparent that Indivisible activists need to step up NOW and take action to let our Senators know that we support them doing whatever it takes to pass this popular legislation.

Passing S.1 is essential to defending our democracy and to stopping the wave of Republican voter suppression happening in many states across the country in service of Trump’s Big Lie. The stakes are clear: this is our best shot to pass democracy reform and we need to keep the urgency and pressure up. If we don't pass the For the People Act before the August recess, we will not get another shot this Congress.

Without a functional democracy in which everyone is included and represented, we can’t achieve any of our other progressive goals. All the issues we care about deeply: health care, immigration, ending wars, racial justice, climate change, voting rights —fixing these things requires a democracy that is responsive to the people, not the powerful and wealthy. And last week's vote on the January 6th commission has brought the need to end the filibuster to a head. We are calling on our Senators to end -- not merely reform -- the filibuster in order to get this done.

We have the opportunity to fundamentally change our democracy for the better. So get on the phone and call your Senators to demand they support S. 1 . Our Senators (Durbin and Duckworth) support it, we need to "stiffen their spines" to push it through. Additionally, S. 1 must be passed quickly -- Democratic Senators cannot let the filibuster get in the way.

  • Senator Duckworth | DC: 202-224-2854 | Chicago 312-886-3506 | Email Sen. Duckworth or call another office

  • Senator Durbin | DC: 202-224-2152 | Chicago 312-353-4952 | Email Sen. Durbin or call another office

Suggested Script: Hi, my name is [NAME] and I’m calling from [ZIP CODE] with Indivisible Chicago. I’m calling Senator [SENATOR NAME] to urge them to vote YES on S. 1, the For the People Act, and ensure the bill is marked up quickly and brought to the floor for a vote. Senate Democrats must ensure this bill is passed and not let the filibuster get in the way. Our democracy is rigged and we need the bold reforms in S. 1 to build a fair, more equitable democracy for all. Will [SENATOR NAME] support and move swiftly on S. 1? Our democracy depends on it.

Next steps: Contact your senators, write letters to the editor, get informed on #ForThePeopleAct via national Indivisible's For The People Project and social media tools from Demcast that you can easily share online. Talk to friends and family and make sure they are taking action, too!

Phone Banking For the People:

Help Save Democracy Every Wednesday!

☎️ Indivisible Chicago has partnered with Common Cause to host phone banks supporting the For the People Act (HR1/S1). This groundbreaking democracy bill will end partisan gerrymandering, expand and protect everyone's right to vote, limit the role of big money in our politics, and hold elected officials to high ethical standards. It's a crucial counter to the voter suppression efforts underway across the country.

📲 Who are we calling? Voters in target states such as Arizona and Maine, asking them to call their senators to support this legislation. We'll give you all the tools and training you need to engage people and connect them directly with their senators' offices. If you've phone banked with ICA before, you'll find the same friendly format, leaders and resources, and fun group of committed volunteers!

2021 Postcards to Swing States

Indivisible Evanston is once again partnering with Postcards to Swing States to write postcards to voters. This time, we're writing to likely Democratic voters in key swing states that have U.S. Senate races in 2022.

🗳 Who are we writing? Voters who cast their ballots for the first time in 2020. With these handwritten postcards, we're thanking them for voting and keeping them engaged now, so they vote again (and vote Democratic!) in 2022.

🖊 Supplies: Indivisible Evanston will provide you with packs of 100 postcards, voter names/addresses and instructions.  You just write the cards and add the $.36 postage stamp. It’s that easy!

📬 Mailing Date: these postcards can be mailed as soon as they are completed, but they must be mailed no later than July 7, 2021.

Postcard Pick Up: you can pick postcard packs seven days a week in two Evanston locations from 10 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

We’ll supply all you need.  Just show up with eager hands and relatively good penmanship!

Masks are not required if you are fully vaccinated.

Thank you to everyone who helped make our first online fundraising effort a big success! A special shout out to the 16 amazing donors who helped us raise a total of $885 (so far) with an average donation of $55! Because we reached (and passed!) our $500 goal by the end of May, Indivisible HQ will now match it with an additional $500. These much-needed funds will help us pay for the tools we use to keep you informed, including Mail Chimp (emails!), SignUp Genius, Zoom, Wix (our website host) and much more. If you haven't donated yet, it's not too late! We appreciate each and every contribution of any amount. Thank you again for your ongoing support -- it means the world to us!

Join us for our June Book Group discussion of "The Ones We've Been Waiting For," by TIME correspondent Charlotte Alter. In this book, Alter defines the class of young leaders who are remaking the nation -- how grappling with 9/11 as teens, serving in Iraq and Afghanistan, occupying Wall Street, protesting with Black Lives Matter, and shouldering their way into a financially rigged political system has shaped the people who will govern the future. The Zoom discussion will be moderated by IE Co-Leader Laura Tanner. The link will be sent out to attendees upon registration. Registration is required to attend.

Rural IL Saturday Phone Banks: 4-5:30 p.m.

☎️ Please join Indivisible Illinois Rural Group this and every Saturday, from 4-5:30 pm for a Zoom Phone Bank! You'll receive training and will call voters in IL-13 to ask them to call their House Rep. Rodney Davis to vote for HR603 -- Raise the Wage Act of 2021.
💰 Davis, of all people, should fight for a living wage for minimum wage workers, as his family owns multiple McDonald's franchises. We'll also be reminding those voters that he did not vote for the American Relief Plan that put money in their pockets and vaccines in their arms. LET'S PUSH RODNEY DAVIS TO VOTE FOR THE $15/HR MINIMUM WAGE!
