Frank and Mary Keep the Party Going!
This year’s Knuckleheads dance party on June 1st was an electrifying success! Over 130 guests gathered to enjoy a  home-cooked Mexican feast (made by our very own Mo Orpin), get down to the funky tunes of Atlantic Express, and raise over $25,000 for The Don Bosco Centers. But this annual event would not even be possible without the incredible generosity of Knuckleheads owners Frank and Mary Hicks. Not only do they let Don Bosco have the use of their indoor saloon and outdoor courtyard to host a terrific open-air concert, they also donate 100% of the ticket sales and pay for the band—with Atlantic Express themselves performing at a discounted rate! If you’re looking for who to thank for the rip-roaring time you had at the event, it’s these two.

For the past three years, owners Frank and Mary have graciously hosted popular dance party/fundraiser. And what keeps the Hicks supporting us? “Because I think Don Bosco is a good deal—I like what they do,” says Frank. It just so happens that Mary herself grew up in the Columbus Park neighborhood and went to the Don Bosco Community Center as a child.
“I love music and I like seeing people have fun,” Frank adds. “The great thing is that I can make money for you guys and everyone can have fun at the same time. It’s only a drop in the bucket, but it’s $25,000 more than you had before—and it raises awareness about what you do!”
Thank you from the bottom of our hearts, Frank and Mary, for showing Don Bosco the love!

Celebrating One Sensational Senior Center Director
Anne Miller, our intrepid Senior Center Director, just celebrated her 25th anniversary of working at Don Bosco! Clients, staff, volunteers, friends, and members of Anne's family gathered to fete her with a party on Friday, June 14. The day's festivities included a rousing round of “For She’s a Jolly Good Fellow,”  gifts, speeches, cake, Anne's favorite pineapple punch, a video of Senior Center clients sharing good wishes and fondness for Anne, and a staff ditty written to the tune of the Gilligan's Island theme song.
Of course, by the following Monday, the Don Bosco rumor mill had turned Anne’s 25th anniversary celebration into a retirement party, so Anne had to come in and reassure everyone that she was  going to be around for a while yet!

Happy Silver Jubilee, Anne! So glad to have you here at the helm of the Senior Center!
Recognizing Exceptional ESL Students
Earlier this month, we held an award ceremony recognizing exceptional English as a Second Language (ESL) learners enrolled in the Independence School District Adult Education Program—our partners at the Don Bosco ESL School. Among the awards presented were:
  • Star Student Awards from each teacher recognizing a student’s special efforts in and out of their classroom.
  • Attendance Awards for current students who had attended the most classroom hours this past year (a major feat when most of our adult learners juggle several other responsibilities).
  • State-issued Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA) certificates and pins to the most recent group to receive their licenses.
  • And a special Citizenship Recognition for students who had become American citizens this past year.
As a thank you for all their hard work this past year, ESL teachers and volunteers each received a drawstring tote handmade by the students in the Sewing Lab of our Workforce Development Program.

Congratulations to all these excellent achievers!
Your support makes our work possible! Don Bosco's fiscal year ends June 30th, and we're asking for your help to FINISH STRONG.
