Don Bosco is Growing!
Dear Friends,

Our new fiscal year just began on July 1st and, with it, a host of exciting new happenings here at Don Bosco. Fittingly, they all involve FOOD!

Perhaps you've already heard: Visit KC has named Don Bosco as the 2020 community partner and beneficiary of KC Restaurant Week! Scheduled for Jan. 10-19, this premier dining event will see hundreds of participating restaurants donating 10 percent of Restaurant Week menu sales to Don Bosco and KCRW's two founding partners. Over the course of its first decade, the event has raised nearly $2.6 million for local charities. Clearly, this is a really big deal for us.

Fundraising from Restaurant Week will be critical in supporting new growth at Don Bosco. With the support of Mid America Regional Council (MARC), we have expanded our hot meal service outside Jackson County to serve an additional 230 lunches to seven senior centers in six counties. This expansion cements Don Bosco’s standing as the largest and most comprehensive Senior Center in the entire region—not simply the KC metro area—with nearly 750 meals prepared in our kitchen each day.

Despite this growth, community resources for older adults have not kept pace with the needs of an aging population. Recognizing this need, Bishop Sullivan Center has partnered with Don Bosco to provide $30,000 in critical funding support for our senior meal program. We are grateful to Bishop Sullivan for their support and, with it, we aim to provide services to over 720 seniors and adults with disabilities a day this year.

Thank you for being a part of the important work we do,

Mo Orpin
Executive Director

The Call to Experience Something New
by Maddie Gramlich
I am a summer intern at the Don Bosco Senior Center. I applied to be a summer intern through the Bishop Sullivan Center, and we were allowed to preference three organizations. I read about Don Bosco and I immediately thought, “This would be a great experience.” I have never worked with seniors, always with children, but I knew I wanted to do something new, and as I’ve come to notice, seniors often have the spirit of children. I also have never worked for a nonprofit agency. I did not know what to expect, but with my degrees I hope to one day work for a Catholic organization.

I can honestly say, so far, that I love it here at Don Bosco. The environment is positive and lively. The best part is the people—the staff and clients. I felt welcomed right away, with smiles every morning. What amazes me is when we are short a staff member someone always steps up without hesitation to cover the need.

In my time here so far, I’ve had many memorable encounters; no two days are really the same. The small things that happen each day really do add up. For instance, we have once client who is always telling new jokes, and he says just likes to keep people smiling. In the mornings he says to me “God is good Miss Maddie.” Of course this makes me smile, especially seeing his joy.
One of my favorite experiences was celebrating our director’s 25th Anniversary of working at Don Bosco. It was great to plan a surprise for her, as she does so much for everyone here. In the short time I’ve been here I can see how selfless she is, as well as all of the staff. I am very thankful for this opportunity.

Maddie is a soon-to-be senior at Rockhurst University, double-majoring in Theology and Communication (Mass Media emphasis ), and minoring in French. She hails from Jefferson City, MO.
