YALLWest in Santa Monica

On May 29th, I was thrilled to attend the second annual YALLWest - the west coast sister festival to YALLFest. While I was a little under the weather - I couldn't hear much after my flight and may have perfected the smile and nod - the day couldn't have been more fun. Not only did I get to sign ARCs for the Penguin giveaway, I also had the opportunity to connect with Julianna Wilson (the executive producer of the A Map for Wrecked Girls audiobook), meet some readers, and hang out with my writer friends. Check out the pics below!
Pre-order A Map for Wrecked Girls and Receive a Limited-Edition Lapel Pin

Pre-ordering the book is the most meaningful way you can support my writing, so as a special thank-you for your support, if you pre-order from any retailer (that can be your favorite indie store, Amazon, or Barnes & Noble - wherever you prefer), I'll send you a limited-edition lapel pin (pictured below). They look pretty stylish on a denim jacket . . . speaking from personal fashion experimentation.

Just send your proof of purchase to and I'll mail your lapel pin ASAP. If you pre-order from Kepler's Books, you'll not only receive a lapel pin, you'll also receive a luggage tag (also pictured below). Pre-orders from Kepler's will be signed and personalized by me and can even be shipped internationally! Kepler's pre-orders will ship out after the book publishes on August 15th.

My Trip to New York City
In April, I had the amazing opportunity to go to New York for five days. For my first trip, I visited the Empire State Building, Rockefeller Center, The Tenement Museum, Radio City Music Hall, Times Square, and more. Unfortunately I didn't get many pictures of my sightseeing. Instead, I focused on the most important things - going to the Penguin Random House offices to meet my editor Jessica Garrison, having wine with my agent Melissa Sarver White at Folio, and - yeah - eating some amazing food (we even hit up the cookie dough place, DO).
A Map for Wrecked Girls is in the Hands of Book Bloggers

Advance Review Copies (ARCs) of the book are making their way to bloggers this month. Below you'll find a photo collage of different ways bloggers have photographed the book plus their swag (a.k.a. ways they've made my heart go boom).

Want one of these? In June and July, I'll have some opportunities for readers to win their very own ARC-and-swag package, which will include some fun sunglasses, a luggage tag, a lapel pin, a sand dollar, a bookmark, a bookplate, an emery board, and - yes - an early copy of the book. Look for the details next month!
My May Obsessions
Bette Midler in Hello, Dolly!
A highlight of the trip to NYC was seeing Bette Midler in Hello, Dolly! But let's be real - it's not fair to call Bette a "May obsession" when my love for Bette began many years ago when I first watched Beaches with my grandma. If you're in NYC soon, a ticket to see The Divine Miss M will be money well spent.
This Fun Swag from the Strand Book Store
Anyone who aspires to get published has probably heard about the Strand Book Store on Twitter or in Publisher's Weekly. I didn't know I'd be walking near the store and ran right into it on my way to The Tenement Museum (another must-see if you're in NYC!). Honestly, it wasn't The Strand sign that drew me in - it was the "Nevertheless She Persisted" gear - and RBG. Obviously.
My Favorite Read of the Month . . . The Wonder of Us by Kim Culbertson
I couldn’t put down this book! Both Riya and Abby’s distinct voices and personalities pop off the page as Culbertson takes them – and you! – on a vivid tour of Europe. Not only is this book a gorgeous tribute to six different countries, at the heart of the story is an emotional journey examining what it’s like to grow up female and the difficulty of establishing an identity of one's own. The Wonder of Us is unexpected, witty, and fun – everything I love about Kim Culbertson’s books!
Coming Next Month . . .
  • Want to read A Map for Wrecked Girls early and receive some themed swag? Details on how to do that are on the way!
  • I'll share some fun facts about the launch party at Kepler's Books in Menlo Park. Until then, mark August 15th on your calendar.
