3rd Times the charm

On the 2nd of August 2018, we at Greenco secured our 3rd Cup of Excellence victory, a testament to the tireless work put in by all involved in our coffee production. However, the most praise must go to our station managers and the farmers they work with! We’re incredibly proud of everyone here, as well as all who competed and placed at the event. Read on to find out how everything happened.

How the day happened

The 2018 edition of Burundi Cup of Excellence took place at hotel La Détente conference centre and hosted producers from Burundi, a national and international jury and many guests involved in the coffee industry. An outside stand set up saw visitors and jury members able to meet and engage with the various producers to find out about their coffees and the coffee industry within Burundi. After some traditional performances and the final cupping session, everyone gathered in the main conference hall to attend the ceremony, followed by the awarding of the top lots and the eventual winners. The day was capped off by some heavy rains but overall it was an amazing success for Greenco and all who shared in a day dedicated to celebrating Burundi’s phenomenal coffees.

Winning lots and rankings

Now it’s time to boast a bit. The top spot place went to Rubagabaga, and the prize was picked up by Ferdinand Ndaruzaniye, the station manager. Other stations to claim a spot were Nemba, Nzove, Nkaka, Kinyana, Kibingo, Yandaro and Kagoma. In total, we took 15 spots in the top 29, with 4 of those stations taking home a presidential certificate for achieving a minimum cupping score of 90. We can't state enough just how proud we are of this achievement.

Credit for Cup of Excellence

Taking first place was phenomenal and we have many to thank for the incredible achievement, but some do deserve most of our thanks and praise. These are our station managers and the farmers they work with to produce the winning lots. The station managers work tirelessly throughout the season, ensuring consistency and quality at every stage in production. Their attention to detail and desire to achieve top quality coffee is something we value dearly and can’t thank them enough for all they do to ensure the quality of the coffee we produce. Then there are the farmers, the backbone of the coffee community. Thanking them really isn’t enough. Their work in caring for their trees and expert cherry selection ensure high quality in the very first stages of production, and it’s their work that allows us to produce coffees that compete with the world's best. To all of you, we say murakoze cane (thank you very much)!

Business as usual

Whilst all the excitement of Cup of Excellence simmers down, activities go on as usual at Greenco. With harvesting coming to an end and production at the stations finished, all stored coffees are being trucked off to Gitega for the milling stage of the season. We'll have more in next month's newsletter regarding post-harvest activities.

August was an exciting and busy time for all of us here at Greenco as we made the transition from harvest and production into the milling phase of the season, meaning it’s almost time for coffees to be sent to all corners of the globe. And of course, there was Cup of Excellence. What an achievement. It’s something that everyone is incredibly proud of and to take it home every year since our first season is evidence of the phenomenal work done by all, and the focus on quality that is only improving each year. To all farmers, station managers, and everyone at Greenco, I give my utmost appreciation for your season-round hard work. Until next time.
