VICE MAYOR JOE COBB ON THE PODCAST

How has the written word helped shape your sense of self and how do you put that into work in the world around us? That's the question we've explored in the nine released episodes of the BOOK CITY ★ Roanoke Podcast on the theme of IDENTITY AND ACTION.

Explore this question of books and the self with guests like City of Roanoke Vice Mayor Joe Cobb. "Living this life is not about what or who we ought to be according to someone else," says Cobb, "but who we come to know ourselves to be. And for me, love is the guiding force in shaping that."

Links to each weekly episode are posted on the website, and here's a shortcut to each of the episodes:

CAPACITY CROWD GATHERS AT THE NEW MELROSE LIBRARY FOR INDECENT HISTORIES

Thanks to the hundreds of people who came out to hear Dr. Ibram X. Kendi and Justin Phillip Reed at Indecent Histories at the Melrose Branch of the Roanoke Public Library on August 29th. The Summer with the National Book Awards event was a program of the National Book Foundation and Roanoke Public Libraries.

Look for information soon on how we’re carrying forward the conversation with a Stamped from the Beginning Book Club. In the meantime, here is some additional reading.

ROANOKE COUNTY PUBLIC LIBRARY SAYS "LET'S TALK"

BOOK CITY Roanoke is partnering with Roanoke County Public Library for the ongoing book and film discussion series, New Connections: Let's Talk. Grab the first book, Palaces for the People by Eric Klinenberg for the first gathering on September 26 at 6:30 PM at South County Library. The subtitle for this work is: How Social Infrastructure can Help Fight Inequality, Polarization, and the Decline of Civic Life. It's sure to be an interesting read and a good discussion with thoughtful neighbors. For session one, read the  introduction and first three chapters. Get all the information on the fall meetings here.

CAMPUS CHARACTERS VISIT HOLLINS SUMMER PROGRAM

If you missed seeing Ashley Wolff's perennial additions to the Hollins landscape this year, check out these images and background on the author and illustrator's festive cutout Campus Characters. Including familiar faces from the pages of classic children's literature, the installation also included images from works awarded with Hollins' Margaret Wise Brown Prize. The characters have gone back into the pages, but they will emerge next year, right about the time students return for the Children's Literature and Children's Book Illustration program, where Wolff has been on faculty since 2008.
