A Word from Laura

Western Friends,

For the last few weeks, our immediate neighborhood has been hit with a Comcast conduit outage that has brought our internet to a standstill and affects all of our operations here at the church.  As you can imagine, this has been a frustration for all of us on staff, particularly with the need for increased communication at the beginning of the program year.

We are exerting as much pressure as possible on Comcast and local representatives to fix the issue.  In the meantime, we appreciate your patience as we try to get back to normal operating and communicating procedure.

In the meantime, if you need to get in touch with staff, calling the office (202-835-8383) may be the best option.

Blessings for your September and always,

Personnel Update:
Business Manager

We are pleased to announce that Nancy Kiefer will now serve as Western’s Business Manager. With this title change, we formalize the transfer of some duties that Nancy had graciously assumed during our transition. In addition to her ongoing duties related to giving, accounting, and finances, Nancy will assist with human resource functions, serve as liaison for all IT needs, and ensure that Western is compliant with all legal and regulatory requirements.

Nancy’s new role will ensure efficient church operations and allow her to be available for special projects when necessary. We are grateful for Nancy’s long and faithful service as Assistant Treasurer and look forward to many years in her new position. Please join us in thanking and congratulating her. From Susie Farr, Personnel Ministry Chair.

Choir Begins

September 9 at 9:45am in the Choir Room

The choral season begins on September 9 with an open rehearsal in the Choir Room at 9:45 a.m. New members are more than welcome to join and participate that morning! If you’re unsure, but interested, feel free to stop by and listen at the rehearsal. Singing in Choir is a way to put your faith into action, putting your musical gifts towards good stewardship by supporting the church in worship and prayer.

Free Inquiry Class Starts

September 9 at 9:45am in Conference Room 216

Leading off the semester is author and raconteur Duke Merriam with a macrohistory of the rise of international organizations in the 20th century.

Topics are usually structured as a program or series that runs for no more than three weeks, so it’s possible to stop and start attending at any time. Classes are led by different subject matter experts from our own congregation and occasional outside speakers. The subjects vary – but seem to always focus on issues that are timely and relevant to contemporary progressive Christians. “Free Inquiry” is an apt name – no subject is off limits, and no cow is sacred – and worth your time to get up one hour earlier on Sundays.

Gather after worship for lunch and a chance to find a ministry opportunity that excites you. Meet leaders and others interested in: Missions, Choir, the All Church Retreat, Family Ministry, Youth Ministry, Campus and Young Adult Ministry, Welcoming New Members, and more.

Children and Families - Music Meet and Greet

Sunday, September 23, After Worship

Stay after worship for 15 minutes to meet our new Minister of Music Allan Laino, and speak with Children's Choir director Amy DeLouise. Meet other parents and learn about music ministry opportunities at Western. Treats and a special organ tour included!

Calling the Church Office? Dial "0"

Next time you call the church office, you may notice a new recording. The office receives several calls each day from those looking for Miriam's and we are trying this new system to redirect those callers more quickly. Every caller will hear this message, even if Shenella is in the office. To get to Shenella or her voicemail, simply dial "0".

Sponsor a “Starter Kit” for Newly Housed Miriam’s Kitchen Guests

We all need the basics when we move to a new home. For our unhoused neighbors moving into permanent supportive housing, that need is even bigger and you can help meet it. Items like cleaning supplies, dishes and silverware, bed sheets, and bath towels are no longer provided by DC and can’t be purchased with food stamps.

Our Mission Ministry is partnering with Miriam’s Kitchen to provide “Starter Kits” with these supplies for two newly housed guests each month. You can sponsor a kit for $100, the Mission Ministry Team will do the shopping, and Miriam’s staff will deliver the items to the resident. Give online by choosing “Mission/Miriam’s Starter Kit” as your designation, or write “Starter Kit” it on your check. Organized by Cheryl Williams (
