A Mindful Response

Saturday, August 11, 7pm

The "unite the right" march will be happening in Washington DC on Sunday Aug 12th.  The white-nationalist group is planning a parade from the Foggy Bottom Metro station to Lafayette Square.  Join us the night before at Western Presbyterian Church as we rally around love and together take a mindful response to hate.  The service will conclude at the Foggy Bottom Metro station where we will offer prayer aloud and in chalk on the ground where marchers will take their first steps the next day.

NEWS

The Session had a special meeting on July 31 to talk about the future of the plaza on the Virginia Avenue side of the church. For many years, there has been a problem with trash, broken glass, needles, human feces, and other waste being deposited on the plaza. Gaston and Sterling have done such a good job cleaning it up that many of us didn’t even know the problem existed.

Session discussed the problem and potential solutions, including a gate along Virginia Avenue.

Right now, we don’t use the plaza, and it feels like a problem that needs to be solved. But Laura offered the possibility of using that space as a way to raise awareness of the mission work to which the congregation is committed, a place for reflection, and a way to invite the community to join us...

*Advocacy: End Family Separation

“Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me.” Matthew 25:40-41

"The 223 General Assembly Condemns the President’s June 20th Executive Order “Affording Congress an Opportunity to Address Family Separation” that further criminalizes migration through the expansion of family detention on military bases and other government property, potentially indefinitely.

The president’s order does nothing to address the plight of the more than 2,300 children who have already been separated from their parents under the president’s “zero tolerance” policy. The reality is that it may not stop separating families, will not reunite the thousands of families already torn apart, and aims to lock up even more children and families."
