Creative Arts at UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital San Francisco
Greetings from the Creative Arts Team at UCSF! We hope you enjoy this edition of the newsletter.
BCH artists are currently exhibiting 14 larger than life self-portraits as part of the Exploratorium's "Self, Made" exhibit. Now through August 24th. Created by patients and their siblings at UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital with art therapist, Shalene Hatton, MFT, ATR, these portraits explore the identity, interests, and feelings of the young patient-artists at the hospital. Each piece begins with the artists having their shadow silhouette traced to serve as the foundation for the work. The artists are then invited to express their inner life on the canvas.
Want to make one of these yourself at a workshop with Shalene? Click here to view the August 24 event on the Exploratorium's event calendar, and learn more about the "Self, Made" exhibit here.
Peterson Family Foundation Music Therapy Program
Last month we celebrated the 2-year anniversary of UCSF releasing this video highlight of our program. It has been watched on Facebook over 130k times and almost 2k times on YouTube. Since then, we've hired another full-time music therapist (Jenny!), trained several interns, hosted educational events, established a medical advisory board, and provided over 5k music therapy sessions. Please celebrate with us by continuing to share and spread the word!
And From the Intensive Care Nursery:
Being a new big brother or sister is an exciting job! Performing these duties gets a little more complicated when your baby brother or sister is in the Intensive Care Nursery. See how music therapy, child life, and the school program teamed up to teach some baby basics.
The right art materials and regular old stuff around the hospital can inspire a myriad of creative activities. In this video, watch as Rocklynn makes use of paper towels, coffee cups, some very special jewels, and of course, googly eyes!
And From the Community:
