Situational Awareness

Mark 14:37-38 (NIV®)
He returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. “Simon,” he said to Peter, “are you asleep? Could you not keep watch for one hour? Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the body is weak.”

Have you ever been especially aware of your surroundings? You may have made a point to notice where the exits were at a packed event or made sure to park in a well-lit area. That’s called situational awareness. You notice what’s around you, think about the possibilities, and plan accordingly. We’re at a point in time when we’re going to have to apply those principles to our spiritual lives as well. We have to stay awake and live with a greater awareness of the things of God. Jesus warns if we fail to watch and pray, we will fall into temptation. Even on our best day, our spirits may be willing, but our bodies are weak. We need the help of the Spirit of God in order to persevere.

This greater awareness and greater intent to seek God are vitally necessary if we are going to meet the challenges of the coming days.

Heavenly Father, help me be awake and aware when You are depending on me to be alert and on point—watching, listening, thinking, and acting as led by Your Holy Spirit. May I depend more fully on Your Spirit to persevere! In Jesus’ name, amen.
