Empowered & Strengthened

Deuteronomy 20:1 (NIV®)
When you go to war against your enemies and see horses and chariots and an army greater than yours, do not be afraid of them, because the LORD your God, who brought you up out of Egypt, will be with you.

We sometimes imagine following Jesus is a pretty thing, the religious version of a tea party. We will wear our best clothes and sit at a nice table, chatting politely with like-minded people, drinking tea from fancy cups, and enjoying scones. In my experience, following Jesus is not like that. In my life, and in others, it often seems like we are engaged in hand-to-hand combat on a battlefield—many times becoming bruised and bloody as we struggle in the spiritual battle for righteousness. In this passage, the Bible speaks frankly about the struggles we will face, but it also tells us we have been equipped and empowered. Passages in the Old Testament and New Testament tell us the Lord gives us strength, provides us with armor, and engages our enemies alongside us. Yes, the battle for righteousness is real. But we are not left to fight it alone.

THINK ABOUT IT
Recall a time when the spiritual battle was fierce, but you could tell God was empowering you to stand and fight. Thank Him again that He does not leave you alone in the fight for righteousness.

PRAYER
Heavenly Father, thank You I do not need to be afraid of the enemy arrayed against me, knowing the battle is Yours. Help me be not only prepared, but confident You will empower and strengthen me for the fight. The victory is Yours! In Jesus’ name, amen.

Onward,
