Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life.
We put quite a bit of effort into protecting ourselves from various things. We wear sunscreen to protect against skin cancer. We lock our houses against intruders. We protect our personal data with passwords and firewalls. We protect investments that we hope will provide for us in the future. We wear seatbelts. Certainly all those things are good and necessary, but the Bible says we should give even more attention to guarding our hearts . . . “above all else,” actually. Why? Because what happens to us is a small matter compared to what happens within us, and everything in our lives flows from our inward state—the condition of our hearts. We guard our hearts intentionally by doing things such as seeking understanding of the Lord and His purposes for us; using discernment when choosing friends; and being a Spirit-filled consumer of television, movies, and music. The condition of your heart will determine the course of your life both in time and eternity, so guard it with great care.
THINK ABOUT IT
Do you spend as much effort guarding your heart as you do protecting your possessions?
Heavenly Father, reveal to me where I need extra caution regarding my heart that I might be a reflection of You and Your transformation. May I stay diligently focused on living a holy life through You. I choose You afresh today. In Jesus’ name, amen.
