Bear It Willingly

Philippians 1:29 (NASB®)
For to you it has been granted for Christ’s sake, not only to believe in Him, but also to suffer on His behalf.

You know the difference between a little suffering and a lot of suffering? It’s whether it’s yours or mine! I define suffering as a difficulty that we didn’t choose. The reality is that suffering comes to everyone, and it comes in all sorts of packages. Suffering arrives with a frightening diagnosis. Suffering comes when injustice or hardship touches you. Suffering is the result of accidents large and small. Suffering also comes to Christ-followers because of our faith. Paul is helping us understand this. We live in a sin-filled world, and there are many people who hate the name of Jesus. As His followers, it is our privilege not only to believe in Him, but to suffer on His behalf. Every time we embrace the suffering we endure for His name, we grow closer to Him, more dependent on Him, and surer of His power to deliver us. So, do not suffer on His behalf with a grudge; bear it willingly, knowing that your faith is growing in the process.

When suffering comes, it can throw everything in our lives off-balance. Simple things can become difficult to manage. In those times, it’s comforting to be reminded that our God is still seated on His throne, unmoved and unshaken. He is our fixed, true north and our stability in times of shaking.

Heavenly Father, help me to make peace with the possibility of suffering. Help me trust You fully through every season of trial, knowing my character is being strengthened by You through my perseverance. In Jesus’ name, amen.
