Our Great & Merciful God
Romans 5:8-9 (NIV®)
But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Since we have now been justified by his blood, how much more shall we be saved from God's wrath through him!
You won’t hear much about it in popular culture, but God’s wrath is just as much a biblical principle as God’s love. God will demonstrate His wrath upon everyone who rebels against Him, but He has intervened so that we can have peace with Him. Your church membership won’t protect you. Your good deeds won’t protect you. Your financial resources won’t protect you. But you can be justified before God through the blood of Jesus Christ. “Now” is a timing word that means this principle applies to every generation. It’s the message we have to give to the world, that because God demonstrated His love for us through the blood of Jesus, our sinful natures can be transformed. He brings us from death to eternal life with Him and gives us meaning and purpose and joy during our days under the sun. What a great and merciful God we serve!
THINK ABOUT IT
God judged sin on the cross—a tremendous gift and demonstration of His love and mercy. Further, He will judge all peoples based upon their response to Jesus’ sin sacrifice on that cross. May your response honor Him.
Heavenly Father, thank You that You are both a God of judgment and mercy—Your mercy saves me from the judgment I deserve. You intervened on my behalf through the cross, and I respond with gratitude, embracing all the freedoms that the blood of Jesus offers. In His name, amen.
