Filled, Tested, Shining Brightly

1 Kings 8:61 (NIV®)
“But your hearts must be fully committed to the LORD our God, to live by his decrees and obey his commands, as at this time.”

The eighth chapter of 1 Kings is a glorious description of the dedication of God’s Temple in Jerusalem. The celebration included moving the Ark of the Covenant into the building, prayers, speeches, and sacrifices. The glory of the Lord was manifested in a cloud so dense that the priests could not see to do their work! To say the people were on a spiritual high is an understatement—and what was the king’s advice to the people? “Don’t forget the way you feel today. Commit yourselves fully to the Lord so you will be able to live by His decrees and obey Him … even when this spiritual mountaintop is just a memory.” It is easy to climb a spiritual mountaintop when we are together in worship. The fellowship, music, and hearing the Word of God proclaimed give us a warm glow. I urge you to prepare yourself to live outside those walls, however, for that is where our faith will be tested and shine the brightest.

Don’t attempt to recreate spiritually exhilarating mountaintop moments that only God can give when, instead, He needs you in the valley where the harvest is.

Heavenly Father, thank You for times of spiritual refreshing, which gives me all I need for greater fruitfulness in Your Kingdom assignments. Help me to persevere when my faith is tested and shine brightly among those whom You are calling. In Jesus’ name, amen.
