PITTSBURGH, PA – The Allegheny County Sheriff’s Office announces the apprehension of Matthew Michanowicz, 52 years of age from Mt Washington. Michanowicz had allegedly left a backpack full of homemade explosives in PNC Plaza Downtown on Sunday. Michanowicz was arrested Wednesday and charged with three counts of possessing weapons of mass destruction and three counts of arson. He posted bond yesterday and was subsequently released.
Last evening, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives executed a federal search warrant at Michanowicz’s residence and confiscated numerous items including “elements for explosive devices”. Due to these findings, his bond was revoked because authorities state he is “a danger to the community" and "needed a behavioral evaluation."
This afternoon, Sheriff’s Deputies began searching for Michanowicz. Deputies would set up surveillance at his residence and viewed Michanowicz sneaking into his residence late this evening. Soon thereafter Sheriff’s Deputies made entry to his home because he refused to answer Deputies. Around 10 PM, he was apprehended without incident at his home in the 100 block Republic Street in Mt. Washington. He was transported to the Allegheny County Jail where he was lodged on the active warrant.
