March 2020 Newsletter

Is March one of your favorite months? For lots of reasons, it is for me. The days and colors are brighter and more vibrant; the weather and landscape transitions are dynamic and energizing; and even the name "march" itself is inspiring.

Every year, we march together through adversity, growth and change as the earth makes its journey around the sun. I believe that art is one meaningful way to interpret the passage, and I appreciate taking this adventure with you.

Bird of Paradise

New Work

As you can see from the two paintings above, I have really been celebrating and embracing color lately. All along the Central Coast of California, the flowers are blooming in profusion. Every day I take a long walk in Santa Barbara and admire the beautiful and vibrant gardens, as well as the vibrant hillsides. My large acrylic, Bird of Paradise, reflects this.

In Alaska and elsewhere, I have been in the middle of vast fields of yellow, purple and white wildflowers. Everything about these moments -- the sights, the smells, and the sounds --  underscore the splendor of life. When I painted Rebel, I was feeling especially experimental with colors and techniques, and wanted to push boundaries. A friend recommended the title. What do you think?

Through the Grasses

Show and Quote of the Month

Each year, one of my favorite shows benefits Santa Barbara's Solstice Celebration. This year the 2020 Solstice Parade theme is: Beautiful Earth! Several of my paintings, including Through the Grasses and Openings, have been juror selected into the Solstice Poster Competition show. The First Thursday reception for this great, month-long exhibit will be tonight at Café Ana's, 1201 Anacapa St between 5-8 pm. It is a terrific venue. Hope to see you there!

Now for my quote of the month. Since the search for truth is more important than ever, whether it be in art or our daily lives, I especially appreciate this quote by Stopford Brooke: "If a thousand old beliefs were ruined in our march to truth, we must still march on."

Thank you for reading my newsletter and for supporting original contemporary abstract art. I look forward to hearing from you.
